Tell me about your vet...

If your OH says hes going to ring, does he actually do it?

I make appointments with receptionists. They all know me (practice number was automatically put on Friends and Family by bT!). They are very good making non urgent appointments to fit in with work, and will phone to let me know when they are on the way if need be. If I need to speak to a vet, they usually phone back as soon as they are back at practice. There is one exception who is hopeless at returning calls, completing paperwork for insurance etc. He must drive the office staff mad but he is a brilliant vet so would forgive him anything!

My vet usually calls me back within 5 or 6 hours, when he returns home for the day, in a NON-emergency. He'll generally book whichever day suits me - I am usually very flexible though so I don't mind when he comes.

In an emergency I have his personal cellphone number, he told me that I am the only client to have this! I never ever call him on this number unless it is a major emergency though. I've only done it once and he answered it immediately and was with me within a few hours......unfortunately he has a huge area to cover so it often takes him some time to get to me. Over here you really do need to be capable of handling most things, have plenty of veterinary medicine, needles etc otherwise you risk your horse dying in front of you. Very different from my vet in the UK who only lived in the next village and came out straight away if I called - but hey I'm used to it now so no big deal.

I'm with the Royal Vet College so usually go through the receptionist and they are pretty quick with appointments. Another thing i like about them is i have been given my vets mobile number before now to call in case of emergency so i don't have to go through the practise.
