Whinge a lot ? My pup sits here and grumbles away to himself in the evening Hmm not unlike my OH really :rolleyes:
I can't make my mind up if it's because he is overtired or if this is what he is going to be like for the rest of his life
He has made more noise in his short life than my rottie ever did in her 8yrs.I don't think I am used to having a noisy dog.

Also, are they generally nervous dogs? The reason I ask is that my little one really doesn't like being walked round the roads at night as he finds the cars very scary. Given half a chance he would do a runner.If he is like this with cars , bonfire night will be a nightmare.Any tips to make him a little braver?
 
Had one lurcher who did nothing but whinge...if she was cold,hungry,not enough blankets and if the cat was looking at her?:rolleyes:
The current lurk whines also if cold,wont go out in rain if she can help it and if she thinks I should turn light off so she can sleep?:o
neither liked traffic much-and the current one was hit and dragged by a car when she was a pup and hasnt ever really developed a liking for cars barr mine and sisters? but is also very nervy if walked on the road.:o
 
I have one that is definitely a vocal, wussy, diva lol!!

The other two aren't though. Patch (foster) is nervy with men but that's because of his background. Dom was nervous as a youngster but again that was his background but he has come out of his shell and not an awful lot bothers him any more. I think being around more confident dogs really helps and just time if it's due to a bad experience. If they are just a wuss then it might not change!
 
My lurcher yodells to me at dinner time :D and he used to do it when we were playing too but he seems to have finally grown up now (at 9 lol!)

My little whippety boy is a bit more nervy but isn't phased by traffic (I suspect he would chase cars if he were given the chance). He never whines but he does do an alarming shriek if he gets shut outside :eek:

On their first bonfire night I always get their favourite squeaky toy and as soon as the fireworks start I jump around like a loon, squeaking their toy, throwing it between me and OH and generally getting them all razzed up. Every dog I've had thinks fireworks are fun ;)
 
Yep both of my lurchers whinged - Talisker would do it without even realising, almost as naturally as breathing :D I told him off for it originally then realised he couldnt actually stop himself :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Plus the lurcher at the yard now whinges consistently, as he has to be tied up when on the yard or he vanishes down the road and beats up dogs on the neighbouring farm :o
 
What age is he?

Re the cars, try sitting/standing at the side of the road for a while and rewarding him with whatever floats his boat (praise, toy, food) the calmer he is. Try and grab his attention as much as possible with squeaky toy, acting like a loon as BM says, so he forgets about the cars.
 
I have 2 lurchers and they are very different from each other. The terrier x whippet is very vocal and has a variety of whines, grunts and chatter but my collie x whippet is generally quiet and only barks if he wants to wind my other dog up. They are nervous of totally different things which is strange as we have had them both from pups so have had the same upbringing and been shown the same things in life.

New Years Eve fireworks my terrier x wasn't bothered but the other one shook the entire bed! If i even hint at getting my hair dryer/vacuum cleaner out terrier x exits the room with a disgusted grunt but my collie x couldn't care less.

Terrier x hides from children other dog wants to lick them to death

Both are fine with traffic although we don't see much of it as lucky to have lots of 'off roading' :) They love going in the car and I think if he could my collie x would drive it!

Puzzling little creatures............:confused:
 
We do get a lot of Victor Meldrew style chuntering just before a good nap- I used to think something was wrong! Plus he likes to sing a happy little song in the car when he thinks we've arrived at the park.

Traffic used to be scary, but I think the 'watch me' and a little reward helped with the big lorries, sometimes a sit and wait if he looked like trying to run off.

Bonfire stuff- lots of shooting/crow scarers near us, when one went off he instantly looked at you to see what were doing. I tried to act casual (!) and it was fine. Plus we played on of the fireworks CDs for for about 5 months before, and he prettty much slept through bonfire night and new years eve.

He does a great line in looking truly pathetic but if you distract with toys/playing its usually forgotton in a second
 
My whippet lurker doesn't talk much. He does have a howly barky thing when playing but otherwise he's quiet. He is very nervous but that's his background, he's getting better with the pack giving him more confidence. He's certainly a very entertaining little chap to have around and I completely understand the attraction of the skinny shakey little things now!!! :D I've always been a staffie or big hairy mutt girlie but I can certainly see another whuppetty thing joining the pack...not yet though!!:D
 
No, thankfully. Spyda doesn't winge or wine, but she'd get short shrift if she did. Our whippet is more prone to it. That said, Spyda mightn't wine but she DOES sound like a 20 stone Rottweiler when the postman comes! She's pretty impressive. I wouldn't burgle our house.... :D
 
Mine's the least whiny dog I know. He does, however, yodel if he really wants whatever tasty food I am currently eating. He also 'grumbles' to himself if he is in his bed and feeling particularly content and comfortable. :D

Ditto, Casper has the most impressive bark i have ever heard. While we still had Roxy the rottie here, a few people heard the bark, assumed it was her, then did a double take when they realised her lips weren't moving... we had ventriloquist-dogs for a while! her bark wasn't anything like as impressive.
maybe lurkers get more vocal with age? my JRTs do i think, one in particular has to comment on everything now, and the older she gets, the more opinionated she is!
 
Yes - my Whippy x Grey whinges a lot - mostly when she wants something - sometimes just because she can. Generally I find it endearing, but on occasions it drives me completely insane!
 
one does, she`s a terrible wimp too, annoys me most of the time lol!! whinges at the slightest thing!!

Other two are great, dont hear a peepe and they are really gutsy....not scared of a thing...
 
Thanks for your replies.I have been a bit busy the last couple of days so not had time to get on here.The little whinger is sat next to me now and whinging lol I think he needs a kip.He is not 5 months old yet. As for the traffic I try to distract him by feeding him treats. He is getting a little better but I can't really complain though as other aspects of his training are coming along.We have 95% recall which I have been led to believe is good for a lurch but he hasn't discovered bunnies yet :D
 
Sorry Digger123 I remembered after I had posted last time - Flick was scared of traffic when I got her, not surprising since she had been picked up from the road as a starving stray :( I was really surprised since I had never had a traffic shy dog before, but I just was patient with her and slowly increased her exposure to traffic and she is fine now :)

My main worry was making sure she didnt back out of her collar, although she did manage this on the M6 hard shoulder last autumn when I thought she had stopped trying :o
