Hi all!

As the title says really could someone explain to me the correct way & any alternative ways to doing belly lifts and butt tucks on horses? :)

Sorry to be a bore but some horses may have soreness or injury that makes this exercise hazardous so are you certain that this is right for this particular horse? The only reason I ask, is because I asked my physio about doing this with my horse as he has not very tight tummy muscles which makes his belly droop a little and she said as he'd just had colic not to do that particular exercise at the time.

I do stretches with my horse everyday I ride (after riding) and get him to stretch round to his bottom or under his belly and he does it really well, the physio said he is very flexible for his age. They are very beneficial.

Hope you get some ideas.

Hey applecart! Yes my veterinary physio has told me to do these stretches with him as he is an ex racer and is still slightly inside out. Currently working him long and low everytime I ride until he is a little stronger and he is now carrying himself well so physio told me to start these exercises with him.

I have done these, but have also found it very useful to reverse the horse a short distance every day.

1. This helps keep a bolshy horse in check!

2. When reversing the horse will lift the belly and tuck the butt!

It was a recommendation from Gillian Higgins, who recommended that a bit of daily reversing could substantially alter muscle. At one time Jay Man would reverse the 10 yards from school to gate daily, don't know why I stopped really.

A little bit of reversing is good, as you say. But too much is punative. Vet suggests 5 back, 5 forward repeat.

Brilliant, sorry didn't mean to sound bossy lol. I am meant to be doing the butt tucks with my horse and was confident when the physio showed me, however I find it impossible to find the 'trigger' point and I really struggle so gave up and just do the stretches instead!

My friend is a physio and explained you follow the muscle from the chest until it comes to a point and go in just behind with spiders legs fingers (her term, basically cupped hand with fingers apart) and push in until you see the back move up. I can now do it by feel after a few days practice. My mare does have a uniquely contemptuous look she uses on such occasions but it's for her own good.
