I have three cats and a labrador.
My oldest cat is 16yrs old and on her last legs - but very happy in her own little world (sleeps alot too)
I have two younger cats who get on great, and are a few years apart - both boys.
Anyhoo, last week I was driving up to my parents and found a kitten sleeping by the roadside - only about 12 weeks old max.
Unfortunately he ran off when I got close, and so ensued a trip to the house to fetch food and a cat box...... then 2 hours trying to catch the poor wee thing.
I just about had him/her, and even touched his head, but a car frightened him off.

I rang the Cats Protection League who have been feeding him the last couple of days and thankfully managed to trap him last night - he'd been sleeping in a rabbit hole, and they suspect he's been dumped, as although frightened is not totally wild.
He/she is now in their care, but mine if I want him/her.

I don't need another cat, and all my animals get on with each other very well (apart from my old cat who dislikes anything with 4 legs and fur - but they know that and stay out of her way, including the dog)

However my heart keeps trying to overule my head...... Will someone tell me to be sensible please!!!

I have said if they really can't find a home to give me a call..... but I really shouldn't, and need the forumite voice of reason ;-)

I'm going to be no help at all and say to keep it

We had one wandered in from the street that had been dumped, and I wouldn't be without him now.

If your elderly cat passes away the kitten will fill that void and so it won't be like adding to the household ;)

Cats have a great way of finding you.

Plus you know you want to!:D

Not helping....... I keep thinking of his/her little face too :-)
I've always said, if I found a cat/kitten i'd keep it, and I agree they often have a way of finding you. Rationally I'm telling myself i've been saved on a technicality, and he's up the road from my parents having the once over and blood tests with the Cat Protection League volunteer.
I've rescued a semi feral kitten in the past, and he turned into one of the nicest cats i've ever had (mind you, I whipped him to the vets the day I picked him off the floor, and £600 of vets bill later, and recovery from severe cat flu, he flourished) - sadly I lost him to kidney failure when he was 5yrs old - the vet thinks his poor start in life left him with damaged kidneys.
It's how I ended up with 3 cats, as my remaining younger cat missed the one I had PTS (and the old one has always been a bit hissy), so I got him a friend. The two younger ones adore the dog too, and get on her bed with her, and seek her out when they come in through the cat flap so I know she wouldn't be a problem.
The down side is, i'm single at the moment - and I really don't want to be viewed as that 'Woman' with all her cats. And i'll also have a 2nd dog at some point too.

Oh god, I hope it's taken out of my hands and someone wants him/her - if not, he/she can come to me....... decisions, decisions, decisions

never have too many cats-and you have less dogs than me so you easily got more room!!!:D;) plus -you dont have to walk them!!!!
And just think so near to xmas they might not find a home for the little fella till well into new year? would you want that on your conscience...little kitty having to stay in an institution for xmas??? :(;)

How many cats do you have?
As for not having to walk cats, I have to try and sneak out at bedtime walkies as my middle cat comes with us if he hears the collar and lead. Sometimes I swear he deliberately waits at the end of the road too, he then proceeds to follow us round the block and shout if he gets left behind in some random Garden - he doubles the time it takes as I worry he'll get beaten up my the Mob Cats so have to wait for him. I get some very funny looks from people when they see the cat and dog trotting along together.

As for kitty, a home in the new year is unthinkable...... he'll be past the really cute stage by then.
This is not helping :-)
All I have is pro's

i have 13 cats and 3 dogs. my cats come round the fields on our walks to check the horses, of which i have too many of those as well! but the cats are so peaceful, fluffy and purry so good for my stress levels keeps the bp down! and think how much fun a dinky kitten will be!!!

Sorry, I'm not going to help here - I have 3 cats and 2 labradors. But would take 10 more cats if I was offered them. And not only would I take them but I would love them all! Keep him!

And here's a picture of 2 of mine out for a walk checking fences:

i have Mr.Miller-2years old, Pixie- 1year old and Daisy 6/7 weeks old. 5 dogs by the way!
all cats were rescues-Miller was born in an institution(his mum was taken in as a stray and had 4kittens)
Pixie was found at local petrol station, the rest of her litter had been run over.
Daisy was found on a main road her mum dropped her in road while crossing and she was killed.:(
the adult cats always come for a run round the field on an afternoon, and daisy sleeps with the puppy and the terrier at night so she will probably start walking with us when she is older too!:)
You know you have to keep the kitten! you know he might end up as one of those little cats that end up in the cats home for years coz everyone wants the cute kitten not a young cat:(
another pro-buying catfood in bulk is cheaper as well and you will never have mice!! result!!:D
And so far ive not been called mad cat woman or dog woman yet? a friend has but she has 9 dogs and thats just daft;)

On that basis, I'm making a big fuss about nothing :-)
Not sure I could stretch to 13 cats and 3 dogs though as I live in a village - I think my neighbours would fall out with me ;-) I'm very impressed with your numbers though.....
Mums the rural one, but she doesn't want another cat as hers vanished into thin air last October, and we spent many false leads and mails shots to every property to find him, but sadly he never turned up. (Anyway, he/she would have much more fun and company at mine)
Oh god, i'm going to have to sit on my hands to stop me picking the phone up...... for now anyway :-)

It's really lovely hearing about everones extended family members, I fear a new addition may be imminent.... and trust me, I will not allow him to go without a home - if nothings sorted in the next week, i'll take him. He's buddied up with another cat at the moment so he's not alone.
As for being rational and sensible, you've all provided me with sound justification to have said kitty - watch this space!!! i'll keep you posted :-)

you know you want to!!!

If you can afford it, do it!

of course you do realize that the only people on the forum who will check out a post with this title is the people who lurve cats anyway! but i suspect you already knew that.....(very canny move!)

Me...I have 5 house cats and 3 stable cats (just lost one and still not got over it by a long shot - so maybe there's another factor to consider - if you can afford it and bear the heartache!)

3 house cats CATS protection,
1 a stray my OH found outside a pub trying to get itself run over, we took her in and then adopted through CATS PRO,
1 - my frend's old lady who needed a new home when she was forced to downsize drastically after a divorce

and the 3 at the yard - all CATS PRO ex-ferals. and absolutely adorable.

I'd have millions but i suppose you have to think of the neighbours...?
ps. post piccies!

Definitely can't have too many cats - we have 4 cats, 22 chooks and 3 horses at home and wouldn't be without any of them originally had 2 cats (Cilla - cos she was black and Oscar a black and white), lost Oscar in a car accident which left Cilla lonely so we took on a rescue 3yo - Pickles (born from a stray mum in a cattery and not tame - now sleeps on her back on your knee), sadly we lost Cilla at Easter due to cancer and then Pickles was lonely/moping.

We decided to take on another adult cat and started looking about, OH texted me from work one morning, his boss had put a poster up about 2 gorgeous male kittens (tabby and white long haired) needing homes, belonged to one of their customers, we arranged to go see them that night and lo and behold said we'd take them, the owner rang a week later to see if we wanted the female instead of one of the males as the person having her had dropped out so we said, no, but we'll take her too!

Would like a dog too but out at work all day :(:(

Poor little kitty, all it wants is a special mummy to call his own!:D

I am back down to 3 now (its the limit my boss has set me:D)

Have rehomed 4 kittens and 1 adult cat.

All mine are "rescues"

1 i found at 4 weeks old and kept, the other 1 was handed to me by one of the security guards as they found him on the drive and the 3rd one was a wild cat i started feeding and got her into my apartment when i knew she was pregnant. They were all meant to be:D

Of course you need another cat! The more the meowier.......couldn't resist that one.

I have a wild rabbit called Psycho Bunny who was given to me at a week or so old after her family were killed by a bulldozer - she is totally mental hence the name, a baby hedgehog one winter, the guinea pig I bought popped three babies and the pet mice did the same - I sold them back to the pet shop though.

At one time I had 2 Dogs, 5 horses, 2 cats, about 50 mice, 8 rabbits & 12 Guinea pigs, a hedgehog, 25 budgies, 6 cockatiels and a hairy flat mate - think he may be human though! lol oh and nearly forgot Einstein, Aristotle & Socretes the chickens.

Thanks for all your replies - so much for the forumite voice of reason ;-)
I've just spoken to the Cats Protection Volunteer, and you'll be pleased to know, that subject to bloods being clear, he/she will be my new addition....... God help me!!!!!

She hasn't sexed him/her, as it was dark when she caught the wee thing, and she's since left him/her to settle in a large Dog run in her Barn (with all her other cats - alot of friendly ferralls that have moved in)

He/she is not great to handle, but doesn't flip out or scratch, so hopefully I can win him/her round in time. The positives are he/she is now chilled at feed times, is using the litter tray and pops its head out of his bed when the other cats come to say hello through the bars - even when the womans about. It didn't flip when caught in the cage either.
This has been my main reason for making the decision now, as it's going to be difficult to rehome for this reason, so the sooner I get the little one home the better - he's also not quite in the Cat Protection System yet, as he would get handed over to someone in the village.

Anyhoo, he/she will be blood tested tomorrow and I'm going to see said kitty on Saturday just to see how wild he/she is..... and will collect as soon as bloods are in.

I'm praying for a boy!!! in my experience they're a bit less jekyll & hyde than girls - but it doesn't matter either way.

Wish me lots of luck........ it's going to be chaos for a while :-)

Yay - great result! :p Hope kitty is fine

We took our adult as a feral cat in May, when we first saw her (born and lived in cattery all her life with no handling), she would just about tolerate being touched but flattened herself down and clearly wasn't keen.

First 2 weeks she's come into the house and hide under cushions on a chair but leg it when you went near (we weren't bothered if she stayed feral or not)

2 weeks after they she was falling asleep on your knee, is now (2 years later) the soppiest thing ever though still an excellent catcher - she was bringing mice into the conservatory for the kittens before they started going out (always killed them before but left them live andntook them to the klittens :o )

Yay! Our stray cat settled within about 10 minutes. Poor thing was so terrified that she wet herself the first time I picked her up :( I managed to tempt her inside though, and fed her pieces of chicken until she settled. She spent the whole night on my bed and asked to be let out in the morning. I didn't think she'd come back, but she was back before dark, miaowing at the door because she didn't know about cat flaps :D
