I had to have my 13 year old collie x PTS just over a week ago. The house is empty and I am missing having him around. OH wants to wait until we come back from holiday at the beginning of October until we look for another dog (we want another rescue dog) but I've already started looking. I've really like the look of this one, but he looks almost identical to the one we lost (although this one looks like it has some terrier in)

I don't want to rush into getting one and then comparing it to the one we lost, but I'm desperate for another one. The other thing that concerns me is going away on holiday and having to put it in kennels for a week when it's already come from a kennels and will feel abandoned again...
Someone bang some sense into me and tell me to wait!

normally id have said yes go for it........

october isnt so far away id wait rather than getting another rescue dog and having to put it in kennels?

unless your taking him/her away with you?

I do sympathise, there is nothing as empty as a house without a dog and some people wait for days before getting another dog or some for much longer. There is no right or wrong with either it depends on the person you are.

Youve taken a shine to this rescue dog but havnt even met it, I think you need to be honest with yourself here and do some soul searching. The logical thing to do is to wait until after your holiday. Perhaps in the mean time you could take a neighbours dog for a walk or indeed a rescue dog.

No we can't take one away with us this time, we are going abroad. We normally had some friends look after the one we've lost, he was never kennelled, but I wouldn't want to have to ask someone to look after a dog we wouldn't really know well enough ourselves in their own home so would have to be kennels.
You're probably right in telling me to wait. There are hundreds of rescue dogs out there looking for homes, and they will still be there when we get back from holiday.

as hard as it is i think thats sensible :)

I do understand how you feel - i have lost 2 dog's in my lifetime (that were mine), and the house isnt the same without a dog.
:(

I think given your circumstances I would wait, it wouldn't really be fair on the dog to come to a new home and then for you to leave it with strangers. Plus, you wouldn't enjoy your holiday so much! :)

Go on holiday and enjoy it in the knowledge that on your return you may look to get another dog

I so know how horrible an empty house is, I lost my GDS in May, found a Lap pup 3 weeks later and brought him home in July. Although I miss Joey soo much, Fudge has brought back happiness, noise, fun laughter.... As Dobie said, there's no right or wrong but would be unfair on new arrival coming home for few days (weeks) and then back to kennels, that wouldn't help with adaptation process.
If meant to be, that fellow will be waiting for you when you get back from holidays and if he's gone to a loving home I'm sure you'll find another mate!
Enjoy your time away so when you get back you can focus on getting a new friend and giving them a loving and caring home. I don't think you could relax on holidays knowing doggy is in a kennel again, so not fair on you either ;-)
