and that it is pointless (and cruel) to rub a puppy's nose in urine or poo done where it shouldn't be?

What is the correct and fair/proven way to encourage house cleanliness?

These are puppies and not mine.

Yes it is cruel and pointless.

It will just create a dog that will find somewhere in the house to go where you can't see and a dog that will never pee outside with your around.

The best way is to have the dog tethered to you at all times in the house. Take them out every 30 minutes and act like they just did the most amazing thing ever when they go outside and give them yummy cookies.

If they pee in the house and you catch them "ah ah" pick them up even mid pee and take the outside. Reward them for finishing outside.

If they pee and you don't catch them take a newspaper roll it up and smack yourself on the head because you are the idiot. Clean the pee up and get on with doing it right.

Simple, put them outside, and immediately after they've eaten.

Alec.

Ets, if that doesn't work, then do as KL suggests, and turn the rolled up newspaper, upon our self, because it isn't the puppy's fault!! a.

I will advise a colleague immediately on Monday although I did say she should not be doing it and to wait til Monday by which time a) I will have the answer from on here and b) they might have found a more sensible approach in the meantime.

Thanks guys x

Absolutely no point, they don't understand. Also, have you seen dogs? My dog EATS her own poo regularly - why would she be embarrassed by being rubbed in it?

With Chloe, I took her out every hour on the hour and regularly in between if she showed any signs. If she did go inside I would pick her up, carry her to the place we wanted her to wee and praise excessively when she did her business outside. I never reacted at all to her when she went inside - just cleaned up with a doggy smell remover.

Take the puppy out at regular intervals - when they wake up, before they sleep and after they have eaten especially. Mad mad amazing praise when they do their duties outside!! :) Buy special odour floor removers to clean the area so the smell doesn't remain. (they aren't expensive)

Tell them NEVER EVER rub a pups nose in it! Firstly, its cruel behaviour - how can someone punish a puppy for something it probably doesn't know its done? Especially if they are caught after the act.
Secondly, it will lead to fearful behaviour relating with doing their business and that's very hard to train out.
Thirdly...as people have said, if you can't devote the time to house training - smack yourself :rolleyes:

Agree with everyone else, let pup out at regualar intervals, and if you catch it messing pick it up immediately and put it outside.
Using puppy training pads can be helpful if pup just cant hold in all night. I used them with my pups, but always lifted it during the day so pup learned outside was the place to do its business

Everything that's been said already. I don't think that puppies really want to go inside where they play, eat, sleep etc. You're just showing them where they can go instead.

I would also say that it might be useful to attach a command to it. We use 'be quick'. It may act just to focus the puppy on doing the job instead of just running around and playing because they're outside. Say it whenever the puppy starts doing something in the right place outside and make a massive fuss. They'll eventually learn what the command means, and your trips outside will get shorter without you waiting around until they go. It's handy later when you start walking them too.
I'm no expert, btw, this is only what I've been told by my dog's breeder but it worked on her (the dog, not the breeder).

And never stop rewarding Dylan is 19 weeks and pretty much housetrained had small accident tonight totally my fault, let him in with the trotter he's been munching for three hours got way to excited and peed on floor, bed and Will! :o. Any way I still reward all three of mine for night time wees and Poos before they go to bed.

Only routine ive ever used for my puppies-

wakes-take outside
eats-take outside
has a play-take outside
when I come back in room from going to pee myself-take outside
when i get ready to go out- take outside
when i go to take older dogs for walk-take outside
when cat comes in and wakes puppy-take outside

Have I missed anything? rubbing a pups nose in urine or faeces doesnt do anything but place urine and faeces on their noses causing anything from sores to distrust in the owner?
