Tell me, whats it like to have a nice/easy horse?

Oh I wish my girl was straightforward!! :-(

She's generally very good, but is quirky. Problems appear out of the blue and there's no reasoning with her when they do!

I would love one! Though I guess it makes him interesting yet it can be flipping frustrating!

Bit worried today as due to the horrendous wind and rain last night thought he would be like some whirling dervish but he was so calm he seemed almost stoned. .. also hadn't box walked as mess was all in one place but then he does now have a nice calm sane horse next to him so maybe they just stood next to each other all night for comfort?

Just strange as this is the same horse that will be petrified of a piece of mud on the floor!

My boy is super easy. He was on box rest for 3 months a couple years back, our first walk out he was a little on his toes but he never barged or tried to pull away. He wasn't ridden for 8 months, popped his tack on and off we went for a little walk in the open forest. I didn't take him out of walk for 12 weeks.

He's been to 9 yards in almost 10 years as he has moved about we with as I've done school, college and various jobs. Sometimes he's lived out 24/7, other times he's been stabled 24/7. Yards have varied from super posh, very busy competition yards to a makeshift stable in a cow shed. No matter where we go I put him in his stable and he's immediately settled. A complete novice can ride him and he'll be your typical unflappable riding school type and then an experienced rider can get on him and he'll right be off the aids. He's point shoot whether it's 0.2m or 1.20m.

He also helps me with the babies, whether it's tolerating them out hacking whilst they spook sideways in to him or standing next to them whilst they're having their first clip or set of shoes. He's always rock steady and is a god send with the tricky ones.

I'm very lucky to have him. :)

I've not read the rest of the thread, but he sounds amazing! What a once in a lifetime kinda lad! x

I read some of the posts but not many! I have a herd of 4 running on a track and when I yell 'come on in' they come running!! They each go into their pen and I can play.....they respond to a feel, both steady and rhythmic and I can move confidently around them....it's not rocket science!! But then I have studied PNH (shock horror!) and keep my ponies in as natural a condition as possible! I am not constrained by yard politics or policies and can do things 'my way'!! I am not limited by convention, opinions or other people!....

Hes getting worse with old age

They do, I think. H was constantly telling me that he was 22-23-24-25-26-27 and could therefore do what the **** he wanted..... He was always a gentleman about it, never rude, and did an excellent line in 'who, me?', but the norty glint got more glinty as he got older and wiser. Mind you there's probably also an element of the fact that I let him a bit because I was pleased to see him feeling well ;)

My green youngster is much more naïve (at the moment....I'm sure we'll encounter the 'answering back' stage at some point).

Ours are all pretty good, but they all have their moments, generally when you're in a rush and need to be somewhere.

I have 5 and they are all FAB!! All different types ranging from 6-22 years and in 40 yrs I have had horses the main things I have learned are, let them be horses, give them as strict a routine as you possibly can and make sure all their basic needs at least are met at all times, I.e food water, regular turnout. All of mine will go out in the field on their own and will hack on their own which I am very proud of. When I hear about all the horrendous problems people have with their horses, it makes me feel like I must be doing something right, hopefully anyway! I do give them treats on a daily basis and yet none of them bite, they don't kick doors when they know it's feed time and they will all load in a trailer or box. I love them all more than life itself but at the same time, I try to keep it as real as possible 😊 now if I could just work that same magic on my darn moggy my life's work will be done!😀😀
