Temperature of hooves

My three year old filly has a marked difference in the temperature of her front hooves, one is frequently stone cold whilst the other is 'normal'. She is periodically unsound - particularly on hard ground - as she has an enflamed pedal bone. On veterinary advice we've tried racing shoes/wraps with no success, they only serve to make the matter worse. Despite repeated trips to veterinary specialists we are no further advanced and I wonder if this difference in temperature in her hooves is playing a part in her unsoundness. After a little low key lunge work the hoof comes back up to temperature and her unsoundness seems to have improved. Has anyone else experienced anything similar please?

That's an odd one, inflammation normally creates heat. Has she had an MRI scan?

Exactly. She has had an MRI scan at my insistence, it's how we found the enflamed pedal bone. Nothing else abnormal whatsoever. Vets have no rational explanation and I've thrown it to this forum to see if anyone else has experienced something similar. I simply can't bottom it out and neither can my extremely talented farrier!

My only guess would be that somehow she's losing the blood supply to the foot and that's killing the bone. I would have hoped the MRI would have showed that and it's a real problem that it hasn't shown anything. One cold foot occasionally isn't that unusual (very often people think it's one hot one but if you feel all four you realise it's one cold one) but in association with lameness I can see why you think they may be connected, and the absence of a diagnosis is very worrying.

I hope she grows out of it soon.
