I wondered if anyone had any experience or advice on short term insurance for a horse.

We are taking a friends pony to camp in a few weeks time due to my daughters pony being out of action and would like to insure it to cover her and us…

Will most insurers cover short term and what kind of price am I looking at paying?

What cover are you looking for?

If third party only then WHW will give £10m cover for a year for about £60 and you help the charity too.

If full vets fees then you can take out a policy paid monthly and cancel with one month's notice. You'd need to take it out 2 weeks in advance, which could cause issues with the fact you don't own the pony and it won't be your risk during those 2 weeks. In that case, the owners should probably insure it and you reimburse them the premium.

Definitely don’t take out the policy, get the owners to do it. You have to have an insurable loss to claim and if the pony goes back to the owners may be arguable from the insurance companies view point

Also if you did need to claim for vet fees you’d then need to pay the policy in full, you wouldn’t be able to claim and then cancel the rest of the policy, at least that’s always been the case with my insurers, others might differ.

I did do just that, though I was really surprised to be able to do so. I was paying monthly for a loan horse that was on trial. Horse went lame after 17 days without having done any significant work with me (was still getting fitter, physio, saddle fit etc sorted.) I was amazed when I was able to claim several thousand and stop the monthly payments when horse returned to his owner. I'd assumed when claiming I was locked into a year of payment.

This would make the most sense, ask the owners to insure the pony for vet fees for injury (if it isnt currently) for a month (starting 14 days before camp as cover is normally limited for first 14 days). Make sure it is a pay monthly cancellable policy. You reimburse the first month. And they cancel policy at the end of the month.

If they have vet fee insurance, you offer to pay the premium for a month.

Oh wow that’s impressive! When Pops broke 32ish days into owning her the claim was accepted but we had to pay the full year’s insurance which was somewhat galling when we lost her a few months later!
