I don't have any access to pony's usual refilling water trough so need a way to water him for a couple of weeks until it's available. I don't have any way of buying buckets etc. but do have a wide, low plastic dustbin, which is sturdy and clean (not used) so would this do on a very temporary basis?? He's just got a few small buckets at the moment but he's easily knocking these over.

It might do but it could also shatter into sharp bits if he's accidentally trodding/kicking it. You could get an old car tyre (found loads where I was just dumped in the local woods :() and put the bucket in that for stability. The tyre makes it harder to kick over.

If he can safely get his head in the dustbin (sounds like he could) and if its the flexible type then it would be fine, if its the brittle plastic sort I wouldnt risk it

I second the car tyre suggestion, this works quite well
