My guy has two sausage shaped swellings either side of the fetlock on his back leg. I have self diagnosed a tendinous windgall!!!

Have read that these should not cause any problems however, not keen to leave it in case I have got it terribly wrong.

He's had them for a couple of weeks now and is not in hard work...10 - 15 mins walking, bit of trot, most days. Apparently these are caused by hard work but he's not been in any form of hard work for over a year.

They came up before I had started riding him so a bit of a mystery. What do you suggest? Get the vet out to be on safe side as intending to up his work soon?

It could be a tendon sheath sprain. If there is any lameness however slight you should consult a vet. Although not serious they do require treatment in the form of cold hosing and injections into the tendon sheath if this is what is diagnosed. My horse was off for about 5 weeks with a tendon sheath sprain following him pecking on landing after a steeplechase fence on a three day event. He had always had wingalls which I believe were down to racing around on hard ground whilst turned out (he came from the continent and I get the feeling sometimes they don't have a lot of turnout). Ask your vet if you think it could be a sprain. x

My horse has exactly the same on one hind leg. He had it drained, time off work and has it bandaged nearly 24/7, it still comes back up. He is sound so we feel that it is more cosmetic than causing him any great harm, do have a word with your vet just to be on the safe side. Good luck!!

get vet to check as thought mine had this but turned out much much worse! currently on wk 10 of box rest!! so please get it checked atleast then you know im sure 9 out of 10 times it is a windgall but just in case.
