So this week has been a busy one. The vet has been out and confirmed the hole has filled in and she's trotted up sound so we can now begin our ridden rehab 😁 Vet is still being guarded as the tendon is showing some weaknesses but YO was there for the scan and said it was looking good. I'm keeping everything crossed that the weaknesses may improve over time (although I'm well aware tendons don't tend to work like that). We've also had the saddler out to check our saddle as Pops has changed shape an awful lot after 3 months of box rest. Thankfully it's absolutely fine so we're now free to crack on with riding.

I've been told to get some tendon boots, but there's so many to choose from it's hard to know which will offer the best protection and help minimise further risk to her tendons. So those that use tendon boots, particularly on horses recovering from a DDFT injury, what would you recommend?

Veredus. Or as a cheaper alternative, I have some Le Mieux Teknique Jumping boots that I love... they have the same properties as the Veredus (gel shock absorption, well ventilated). If I were you I would prioritise ventilation in your search as you want to avoid heating the legs and some cheaper boots do heat the legs. One of mine has had a check ligament strain and the other a suspensory tear so I've thought long and hard about boots too! Good luck with rehab!!

Thanks Bisou, I've been looking at the Veredus Piaffes but will take a look at the Lemieux Teknique boots too as whilst I want the best for her, if I could save some pennies it would be appreciated. So sorry to hear about your horses, hopefully they're both recovering well.

They're both fully recovered -- thanks!! One was a few years ago and the other was about 10 years ago haha. But I'm always paranoid so put boots on for any fast work or jumping and I still cold-hose after jumping, and put stable bandages on at night. There are also schooling wraps etc if you don't want to put tendon boots on for flatwork, and I quite like just elasticated bandages too. There are different opinions on these but personally I'd also recommend magnetic therapy for when the horse is standing in to stop legs filling or reduce swelling/before working them to warm them up.. leg wraps or boots :) however magnets do produce heat so I wouldn't leave them on for long, but I know a lot of people do :)

Haha I understand the paranoia well. I'm one step away from wrapping her in bubble wrap! We have ice vibes and I've just ordered the Veredus magnetik stable boots and some training wraps (the half fleece, half elastic ones) so just the tendon boots to go now. Sure it may not make a difference but I trust my vet implicitly and follow his advice to a t as his treatment so far has taken her from a suggestion of PTS to being sound enough to start ridden work.

Wow! Bless her. You must be over the moon now and it sounds like you're giving her every chance! I get that tendon boots won't help it heal as such but I don't see anything wrong with putting them on to stop the horse knocking themselves. Some people even put hard shell boots on to turn out in, although I don't. As long as they don't heat up the legs or slip around they can't do any harm..that's my opinion! Good luck xx

Fantastic news - so pleased for you both :)

Tendon boots will not support the tendons. I would bandage with gamgee if you are feeling like you need to proactive, which I completely understand, I would be too.

Plain old ice and tubigrip really is the best way to cool legs :)
