I have a 12 year old WB gelding who for the last few weeks has developed a spongy swelling in the inside of his near fore leg behind the cannon bone where the groove down the leg is over the tendon area. Last night it was significantly puffed and I put an ice pack on it but it made no difference. Then I trotted him up for my friend and when I tied him up again the swollen area of puffiness had gone right down. I rode him last night in the school, for about 20 mins, walk, trot and canter, he is not lame and there was no heat and the leg had gone down again. Before putting him to bed for the night it had come back up again. He has always had wingalls on his hind fetlocks so I am used to those but is this a sign of a tendon problem and is this synovial fluid anything to worry about? I am going to ring the vets today for advice, but really don't want a call out as he is not lame but I will be guided by them.
