We are 4 weeks down the line now and Hector is going in for x rays on his leg and further scans as the mobile scanner couldnt pick up much due to swelling

((as a recap he came in lame 4 weeks ago lots of cuts, vet thought infection , 3 weeks and 3 more visits later 3 different vets form same practise :S he had a scan yesterday , hes been allowed turnout and each time hes been better, but then come in worse, so Im assuming the turnout did him no favours. ))

Anyway hes still swollen not as much but fetlock back of leg part way up canon bone, front nearside leg, vet thinks possible tendon/check ligament injury, she said it looked like there was a lot of trauma in that area but his suspensory looked fine.

Not ruling out hair line fracture either, what on earth he did, I dont know.

Are we talking 6 months plus for check ligament healing or worse?

Check ligament injury is just below the knee and to the side, not in the bottom half of the cannon bone area or to the back.

Are you sure they don't mean the suspensory ligament branch which is in that area - and also called part of the "stay apparatus" in the leg (because their function is to stop too much movement instead of causing movement).

If it's a suspensory you could be in for up to a year. Check ligament up to 4 months. Both highly dependant on the right treatment meanwhile.

Mine came up lame at the end of August - scanned it and it is a check ligament and DDFT injury (3cm tear in DDFT where check ligament attaches!)

He is being hand walked now for 10 mins a day and allowed out in a small t/o area for a couple of hours.

Depending on how badly injured your horse is depends on how long it will take! I'm 4 months down the line and there hasn't been a massive improvement on the scans! My boy is looking at at least 12-18 months!!!!

ooh, sorry to hear that chunkymonkey - it's a devil when they do the bit that joins to the DDFT, that's exactly the injury my friend's horse had two years ago and he was out a year. But she was also silly and didn't walk her horse in hand as she was told to, and you are doing all the right things. I hope he makes a sudden improvement soon.

Nope she deff said check, she said the suspensory looked solid, but I did have a nose online and your right the check is higher :S thats worrying indeed. One vet thought hair line bone fracture but thinks its more likely a deep infection :S, another vet thinks almost certainly soft tissue,

The swelling is at the back of the fetlock and moves up to 1/2 way up the canon bone but the worst bit is at the bottom, he is sore on the sides as well. Will see whats said tomorrow

CM hope your horse recovers soon, i couldnt imagine that long a wait on box rest

Good grief! Is that a horse vet? That can't possibly be a check ligament strain with the swelling where you describe it !!!

Could be suspensory ligament branches. Could be cellulitis or lymphangitis. Could be a foot infection. I hope it's the second, or third or something else as simple. Let us know when you know yourself.
