My mare is on box rest this week because an old tendon sheath injury has flared up. I didn't even know she had an old tendon sheath injury. Oh well.
Her owner says it occasionally 'just happens' and will go away on its own. YM agrees she'll be fine after a week off. She's bright eyed and not reluctant to move about, and she's happy enough to dangle either foreleg in the air for a treat, so can't be in that much pain but I feel awful because I have no idea what caused it, I can't fix it and I can't prevent it from happening again.

Any stories about horses with injuries that keep flaring up doing well? Still hacking and schooling and competing?

Better yet, any ideas what might cause it and how I can stop it from happening again???

My old mare had a tendon sheath injury and it would go down with box rest, but would flare up again if she charged about in the field or after riding etc. After months of intermittent lameness/swelling that was often barely noticeable (even her owner said she was fine) I being a worrywort called the vet and had her leg scanned.
She ended up with an op to get rid of the scar tissue, after rehabilitation she was fine and was back in full work.
In hindsight the vet has a reputation for being far too quick to put them under the knife, so she may not have needed the op as she was old and just a happy hacker... but she was insured up to the eyeballs so the owner wanted it done.

Thanks, noblesteed. Glad to hear you mare was fine and soon back in work.

Doesn't exactly fill me with confidence though. :-(. I guess we're not going eventing after all. I suspect it was working on smaller circles - too small, too many, too quickly. :-(
Proper fed up now.

my mare went lame a couple of months ago..couldnt find anything untill we ultrasounded turned out she had a lesion in her tendon and there was no heat, swelling...nothing. thought she was knackered and that was it...absolutely gutted so put her on tendonease and hacked. 2 months later shes come sound and shes all fine :) just bandage her everytime i ride.

was told to ride her till she comes lame...but thats not happened yet :)

best of luck with yours!!

My mare had surgery too. Sounds like the same as NobleSteeds horse had.

unfortunately, her rehab hasnt worked that great :(
She got up to hacking, but keeps going lame after a certain fitness level :/
She had steroid injections which helped for a few months, but she's retired :(
