I have very recently taken on a super ex-racer, he's 10 in May and finished racing 4 years ago with a (quote) 'touch of a leg' - since then he's been sound but retired to the field. I picked him up at the weekend and will starting to bring him back into work following a fittening programme. There's very little evidence of his old injury, just very very slight thickening of the tendon.

However, I want to give him the best chance so I'm wondering if there is a supplement out there to support his muscles, tendons, ligaments etc while I bring him back into work. My 22yo TB (also an ex-racer) is on Suppleaze Gold which contains glucosamine HCL, chondroitin sulphate, msm & hyaluronic acid. Would that help the new boy or is there something else out there more suitable for this situation (or would you recommend nothing at all?!)

Any advice would be very welcome... :-)

Having rehabbed a racehorse back from a tendon injury last year the best advice would be to walk, walk and walk on a good firm surface, ours walked mainly on the roads, unshod, for 2 months before doing any trotting apart from the odd jog to get out of the way of traffic. The longer you take to do this the more chance of success as everything will tighten up, I think keeping him unshod also helped as there was less concussion and his feet really developed in that time which helps support the whole leg, after 3 months, the 2nd trotting increasingly further, he started cantering gently up a field, went back to full training after another month and his leg is looking great which is, I think, due to him having a good rest turned out 24/7 then being brought back very slowly, he had no supplements and was on no feed all summer just grass as he was rather well and we did not want any extra weight on the legs.

No boots were used either, he now wears them for fast work only.

Thanks for your replies everyone. His tendon injury was over 4yrs ago but I'll definitely do plenty of walking for first few months to strengthen him up. Am lucky as have a walker at the yard and good hacking. Will also research pure MSM & the Global Herbs supplement. It's difficult though as the injury is already healed, I just want to prevent it reoccurring...

I used MSM at first then switched to equimins joint supplement as an all rounder. Agree lots of walking is the best way and build up any work very gradually, we are only just jumping 60cm atm and his injury was over 2 years ago (then had a tendon problem 9 months later, diff leg)

My horse is 35 now and recovered from a tendon injury nearly a year ago, I think a huge contributor was the N.E.W magnet boots I used. I put them on his back legs as they don't need to be on the affected leg to work. My horse also has thickening after the injury but its just healed like that and you can't do anything about it, he is sound (touch wood) and in his brain thinks he is 3 which doesn't help. Not sure what supplements work. I use Equimins flexijoint liquid supplement

Be careful on walker that it doesn't put too much strain on the bad leg on the inside etc
