Hi would really appreciate some advise. My mare slightly damaged her suspensory ligament just after xmas. She was scanned and most of the fibres were absolutely fine it was really just a case of being inflammed. So did the religious box rest, walking in hand, cold hosing and initially some bute. All was going fine and we started to return to work and then had a particular excitable day and the next day there was a bit of heat. She was immediately rescanned and although there was considerable progress from xmas some of the inflammation has definitely returned.

After look through old posts I have seen people recommend msm which I will buy for her tomorrow but vet has also suggested either Cartrophen, Adequan or IRAP does anyone have any experience of these and how successful. However frustrating this is I love this mare to death so im in no hurry to rush her but anything I can do to help long term prognosis I will

Thanks

Ligament is not the same as a tendon, but treatment is much the same, I think you need to forget about working her and when the heat has gone from this episode, turn her out, using Sedolin if necessary to prevent galloping about, leave for twice as long as she has had a problem. Check every day, the slightest heat is a worry, and will mean you should extend the rest period, I am sure vet tests are scientific, and are designed to clarify treatment etc, but time is the best treatment,

Sounds like you did the right things but brought work back too soon, i would let the leg have a long rest and time to recover but i have to say box rest did nothing really for my horse except upset her and make her gallop round like a nutcase when she was let out !, she onli started healing well after she was let to wander around on the leg all day, the odd jump doesn't make much difference- mine did /does a bronc display most days and 6 months on has never gone lame since with very carefull bringing back into work, she had 3 months completely off on high levels of supplements and then introduced work from 5 minutes walking gradually increasing up to 30 minutes, then a couple of strides of trot etc.
just take it slow.

Same thing happened to one of mine

19 months ago he did a very bad hind suspensory ligament. We did everything box rest(well small area as he does not do stables) Cartrophen, Shock Wave, plasma transfer into the ligament. He came back into work very slowly and by last August we took him on an Endurance ride (65k) went through fine.

This January we had him back in work and he switched the same leg but the other side ( not badly) again we repeated the same as before. He is now back in work.

I would use Cartrophen
