Hi
I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what may be happening with my horse. He appeared to have the start of a bow tendon on the ns front last week which has been going down lovely, but a couple of days ago the other front tendon os front came up then yesterday it broke out and started seeping which i put a animal limtex on and it brought some infections out but the thing is the other tendon the first problem one has done the same thing and started seeping too, there is no obvious wounds on either legs they are both bandaged with animal limtex tonight!! he goes for a scan on monday.
many thanks nic

Is he lame? Is it painful when you touch/press on it?
Could he have got stung with something in the field? My gelding once got tangled up in some hawthorn branches that had been trimmed off the tree. Some days/ a week later it swelled up and became infected because the tip of the thorns had embedded in his skin - could it be something like that?

hi
no hes not lame tender to the touch though but not so bad that i had a problem bandaging. It really has me bambozzeled to what is going on, its times like this when i wish i had xray vision it just seems so long off having to wait until monday for a scan.
Thanks Nic

How long have you been bandaging and what sort of bandages do you use? Do you know what may have caused the tendon to bow in the first place ?

He has been bandaged very carefully since he bowed his tendon a week past sunday, i have had years and years of experiance of bandaging and have never had any problems, and the bow that came up was the reason for bandaging i dont believe in bandaging for the sake of it .... i just found it very strange that the leg was healing really well and all inflamation was nearly out then they broke out with the seeping infection from no obvious wound, i have never experianced this with a bow before.
Thanks Nic

Unless there is puncture wounds that have become infected, this sounds more like lymphangitis than a bowed tendon to me.

press your thumb into the swelling and then see does the swelling "hold" the thumbprint. if it does then you have fluid/pus not a bow and my money would be on lymphangitis!

Thanks for your replys
Today the inflammation has come right down hes still tender but the infection seems to have healed up i have left the bandages off and just washed all the residue of the poultice off and then washed down with a vinegar mix i use fingers crossed the legs are still down tomorrow. its hard knowing what to do for the best (sometimes i wish they could talk!) it would make life a lot easier!
luckily hes a very sensible horse .......... when hes outside!! i havent been able to give him box rest as he would have made the legs worse he just wouldnt settle and kept digging his bed up and constant weaving which he doesnt do with access to outside luckily i was able to fence a small strip off so he could have access to a little grass and his stable for shelter.
Thanks again for your responses.
Nic
