Tenessee Walking Horses

I was doing a search for Tennessee Walking Horses (TWH) to watch naturally gaited on video but noticed there'd been a thread (now closed) about them on this website. I am sad to have read that some members have seen the show horses in the US! This is a minority but because it is so dramatic makes for bad press for the breed. There really is no need for bad treatment!

I own two of these wonderful horses in North Wales. Both are barefooted - I use front boots if needed - and they are really people orientated horses and love your company. Mine is proving to be a good trail horse.

Hi there

I have always loved TWHs but hate the seemingly barbaric methods of training and the tails/hooves thing. I have seen videos of naturally gaited horses and find them fascinating as it appears that things like the running walk etc can be seen even on foals. I imagine that they make fantastic riding horses for riding out. What else can they do apart from hacking?

I would love to have a sit up if I wasn't so far away. Be interested to see some pictures anyway. Good luck with them.

They are capable of most equestrian occupations. The walking gait doesn't bar them from them, but they are better suited to trail riding/endurance work for speed and comfort. I have mare and 2 yrs 4 month filly who has gaited since birth. I am considering long lining the filly with a view to putting her in shafts. Her mother has done a 100 miles in one ride last year and 60 miles this year. I really enjoy her company. She is intelligent and kind and rather bullied by my Arab, but she finds ways round that to get what she wants.

Forget the the barbaric videos you see. That is the Americans at their worst. I assume you are in Ireland by your Username. If ever you hop across the water look me up. You be welcome.
