The other thread about TWH got me watching videos on youtube.

I have watched a lot about the Tennesse Walking horses on several occasions before but I came across one video that has to be the worst movement on a horse I have ever seen. The canter will make your soul bleed. :(

What saddens me more is that it won the class!

dang the embedding doesnt work - click where it says 'watch on youtube'

I've just watched a couple of You Tube clips plus some of the OP's link. It's just awful, I had no idea exactly how horrible it was. :(

I have never been able to get my head around why people a e so misguided as to think that anything about this looks attractive.

TSWs are great horses, and very comfortable when they haven't got 4 inches of kegs nailed onto (and into) their feet. The ones I know and ride are all unshod.

This is the REAL TWH :

Now THIS is beautiful - why do they have to mess with this, it's gorgeous.

I have to ask how long the 'big lick' horse's hocks etc cope with that amount of strain quite apart from the whole soring thing (which is disgusting)

Barbaric. I cannot even believe that this is allowed, and some of those riders are sat on the weakest part of the horses back. I watched one of the videos and some 'judge' was harping on about tradition, they should shove it where the sun don't shine. Is there a lot of money in it? Is that why they are treating these beautiful animal like soulless, wooden rocking horses? By all means promote their unique gait, but without the torture and gadgets. :(

If you watch this interview it tells you what happens to most of them - what is astounding is that there are a lot of people complicit in this, the owners, the trainers, the riders, the grooms and even the vets that sell them copious amounts of pain medicine to cover it up.

They don't mention this either:

'Tail Nicking

Nicking involves slicing the retractor muscles below a horse's tail, then placing the horse's tail in a tail set. New muscle is laid down in between the cut ends to reconnect the original muscle, thereby creating the muscles and ligaments to heal longer than they were initially. Once healed, the tail-set may be removed, though some trainers are reported to put it on their horses during stall time. While wearing a tail-set, horses must be confined...which of course then limits their time outside as nature intended. There are other methods of tail-setting, with this being the most severe form. Proponents of the procedure claim it is "harmless" and "painless".'

I am baffled that anyone could possibly think that this is attractive.

There have been big scandles in the TWH world - didn't one championship show get cancelled as none of the competitors turned up as there were going to be welfare people there? And wasn't a trainer recently jailed for cruelty. The really sad thing is that, if you asked the owners, they would say that they love their horses.
