Surely walking in this manner (or which ever gait it is) must present alot strain down their backs to their hind quaters and legs. It seems like the most un-natural thing some people do with their horses

Not my cup of tea, but there is a huge following for some reason that I can't for the life of me fathom.

Can't see her feet and shoes properly but I expect she is wearing huge wedges. Poor thing, more robot/wind up toy than horse. Not going to go down the 'soring' road here, as I think it's been done before.

I have looked at some of these clips before, there are some others of what I think they call "barefoot" or "natural" TWH and their unenhanced paces look much better and more comfortable. The 'gait and gallop' shows one moving in a more natural way I think.

There are some fairly scarey clips on You Tube, the showing ones for a start, I would never go to a show like that, I wouldn't trust myself to keep my big mouth shut.

ooooohhh I dont like the look of that!
It looks bizarre- i know nothing about the breed so am noone to judge but I thnk that looks horribley unaturall!

and dressage and continual jumping do not????

hmmmmmmm I think even I know the ans to this one

Also...these horses are born with a far different gate than most horses, the same is true for paso finos and Rocky mountain horses for example.

research ALL angles of the story before you criticise please

also...they are not my cup of tea either. I have always found them sort of strange and gangly looking

I thought it was supposed to be a very comfortable gait for the rider.

the gait is VERY confortable, it's just the way he is moving his legs up so high that i wouldn't believe to be confortable

My old pony used to this so i do know its confortable, jus a bit anoying when your wanting to trot

ps: she only had the gait - no soaring (sp!)

loved the clip Enfys posted - the dog looks like he is having a wonderful time! although it looks weird if you haven't seen much of it, the horses are bred with that movement, and I suppose because we don't have much saddle seat etc here it looks strange to us.
I'm sure that if we'd never seen show-jumping or driving before we would be horrified! Would love to have a go at it, bet it feels amazing.
As for the post re soring, yes of course that is awful but I'm sure that many nice people ride in this manner without resorting to these inhumane practices. I guess all disciplines have their rotten eggs...even predominately 'English' ones.

yep...and here is the opening statement on that link...........

Many gaited horse trainers have built solid careers training sound horses, the old fashioned way - lots of wet saddle blankets, time and skill. Plenty of exhibitors know some competitors sore their horses, but nothing could compel them to do it. Most owners would clobber anyone who hurt their horse. In fact, the vast majority of gaited horses are trained, shown and owned by people who would never stoop to soring. But when they compete, they never know when they might be up against those who don't mind taking the low road when it comes to getting a competitive edge. Soring is cheating. But it is also, inhumane, and illegal. Grab a flashlight. We're going over to the dark side.

It was a question that I've now had answered, Looking on wikipedia where they closed a few classes recently at a TWH show because of soring I can see that yes these over exaggarated gaits are quite natural. I have not seen many horses down my local show with these gaits thus thats why i posted. But thanks Jade

Glad you got to the bottom of it and can now sleep much better !

btw...I meant to say "gait " above

Do not want to leave everyone wondering if you need different gate's to hold these horses in when they are born
tongue.gif
Normal standard gates will hold them in I am sure

Im taking back waht i said in the begining as i wasn't watching the horse, all i was watching was the soring...yes i do disagree with this, but the gait doesn't bother me, i had a pony that did taht, and people thought it looked special, didn't do anything to her back, hind quaters and legs...she was checked by a vet reagularly and NOTHING came up and my pony was as healthy as anything, she was never lame.....

lol I meant that the running walk type thing that the horse is doing is supposed to be comfortable.
am I right in thinking that this horse was developed especially for a comfortable ride?
I don't like all the boots and weights and things, but loads of other breeds move in a way that seems strange to most of us. like Icelandics

Blimey! just looked myself and I am with the 'that looks freaky' camp on this one. I can't beleive this is down to breeding and type alone - it is nothing like the natural gait of any horses I've ever seen.

is it just me or does she appear to have something on her front feet?...

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, it looked like petal-type overreach boots but I daren't look againn in case I have wierd dreams about it tonight!

and dressage is all natural and the horses are just BORN doing this??? No, it is obviously some training too...but no worse that the effects and strain caused by many other forms of horsemanship. Racing, dessage, jumping, etc ALL of these things are unnatural to the degree they are done and cause problems for horses in some respects

There is a Tennessee walking horse Stud just down the road from where I live. They are all beautiful horses and spoilt rotten.

It is commented on around here that it is the "rednecks" who buy them and treat them badly.

Sheryl Crow the country singer has one or two I believe.

Hi Jade, before I came here I had only ever heard of Gaited horses and had never seen one apart from Pacers and Icelandics of course.

We have lots around here, TWH, Paso finos and Peruvians, and the pretty Rocky Mountains it has been an eye opener for me. They all move, naturally, in different ways. There are Paso foals near here and they all gait. They look like clockwork toys but I've ridden a Paso and I love them, they are small, sparky and so smooth, OK they have an upside down arab tail carriage but you can't see that when it's behind you!
smile.gif
I am having one, they can actually move normally too.
