Oh god, someone shoot me! :P
Took my little welshie (12.3 4 year old usually very nice but has the odd baby moment) out on a hack earlier, we live near a really nice national trust park type place where there are tracks to hack around. At one point you are on the drive of the whole place and I was happily ambling along on a long rein, we had a few cars going by, as usual pony took no notice, then for some unknown reason he took fright at a car coming towards us, attempted to jump the electric fence (which I have always seen as a disaster waiting to happen; electric fence next to bridleway and road). We brought the fence down, I have never been more scared as was sure the wire would have ripped his legs, and as soon as I had got control (we had had a fair gallop with fence following us, me stirrupless!) I jumped off, stuck finger up at driver who was driving off(!) and checked his legs which were incredibly absolutely fine! I have no idea but the relief I felt was huge! Anyway, we were now stuck in the field having jumped in, and it wasnt really just a field is more like a few hundred acre deer park and the only gate I know was about a 30 minute walk away and came out onto a main road. THEN a school security van came along (park also has a school in it, in fact, my school to my embarassment!) and asked me if I was ok etc, I asked if he knew where nearest gate was which he didnt. He decided to step on the electric fence to bring it to the floor and see if the pony would lead over and for some stupid reason I agreed (it was RIGHT on the floor). Anyway as was typical, pony somehow managed to make contact with it/get stuck or whatever, and shot back wards, I tried to hold him got dragged over and he started galloping across the park. I started following him at which the security man told me to come back, so I told him I needed to get my pony and he told me I needed to come back (oops bad child me!) but I went back eventually and got in his van and he walky talkied 3 other security people who all came out of nowhere and we were searching all over the grounds for this bloody pony! eventually found him standing in the landscape gardens under some monument with a mouthful of grass. He must have jumped another fence to have got there. He had hardly sweated up and hadn't got a mark on him! Have to say its the most terrified I've ever been I think! just somehow all ended up one unlucky thing after another! Going to see those security men around school now, it will be awful! :P
Very impressed though that I got back and he behaved really well, despite all his excitements!
Also my mum had seen some people I REALLY dont get on with go riding that way about 10 minutes ahead of me, and I am SO GLAD we didnt manage to catch up with them, or my pony end up with theirs as I'd have had it ripped out of me!
Despite the unluckiness and some silly decisions it has to be said we came off VERY well all things considering!

Glad your pony is ok, thankfully he let your catch him, most ponies tend to decide having a loony around the place is a far better idea. Don't be embarrassed, these sort of incidents happen all the time, luckily it turned out well.

It gave the security a story to tell when they got home, infiltrating ponies don't pop up everyday!

oh I had forgotten to add, as the pony spooked the driver had kept on coming towards us basically giving him nowhere to go and then just driven off, really not particularly well thought of them! They just werent stopping or slowing!

Glad pony is okay.

Agree with broke_but_happy, don't know why you felt the need to stick your finger up, I find that very rude. It's things like that that give horses/riders on roads a bad rep.
I also wouldn't have my horse on a long rein when traffic is about, especially with a four year old, no matter how good you think he is in traffic.

Don't sweat it:) Horses are like children at times. My daughter, as a baby, pulled my top down whilst queuing at a Tesco checkout. Luckily I was wearing a bra.:o

Drivers not slowing or showing consideration, particularly when they can see your struggling, I tend to get annoyed with as well, under stress I would have given more than a finger as well, glad your ok, Laffed at the munching grass bit :) naughty pony :D

Glad you're ok!

And don't worry about swearing at them, it was bl00dy inconsiderate for them not to stop when they saw you were in trouble!! I'm not saying swearing is necessary, but often in the heat of the moment it can't be helped (i.e. last night as I hacked through my village and a cyclist flashed past me about a foot away from my styrrup, if that..... i am not ashamed to say I shouted expletives at him as he rode away!)
