Terribly sad afternoon

I found my first pony in the field with a compound fracture to his cannon an splint bone on his near hind. Worst experience of my life. He was out with another mare who he absolutely adored and she adored him. Been together over a year. We still don't know if it was a kick or a fall due to her being brought in earlier than him. Anyway, got my new horse some months later, went down to see him to find he had been moved into a field with a huge pushing 17hh horse, no introduction or anything. Yard owner (who frankly doesnt have a CLUE) had just done it without telling me or the other owner! I was livid. Needless to say that was the beginning of the end for me at that yard and I moved not long after due to a multitude of problems. Luckily my new lad got away with just a trashed rug. still Annoying but I'd rather have this 100 times over than what could have happened! RIP to all our much loved horses. Sometimes these things just can't be helped <3

I wonder if it makes any difference at all.

I know to our lot it makes a huge difference. The difference between being hounded and chased and being grudgingly accepted. We introduce the lowest ranking herd members before the boss, and they all get to meet the newcomer alone before as a group - we only have 5 horses! In the olden days when we had a section D introductions were horrible :(

So sorry, very sad news! Unfortunately thats horses for you, you can have them saying hello to each other for weeks over the hedge, put them in together and they sort our heirachy, and wham! I wouldn't lay any blame, thats horses for you :-(

I agree with Devonshire dumpling, that's horses for you unfortunately they have a heirachy and sometimes accidents happen :( No one is to blame, it's unfortunately a very terrible accident.

How sad, I lost a youngster with broken leg and there was just him and his 6mth mate with him. Accidents happen even when you try to wrap them up in cotton wool.

So sad, if they had been in for3 months it may have just been a result of them having a buck at each other.
When ever ours have been in for a long time we turn out on their own 1st time and sometimes give a bit of sedalin.

Poor horse and poor owners :(

I remember a friend of a friends horse had to be put down because it stood too close and the other horse tried to give a warning kick but caught it in the leg and it broke :(

So so sad :(

My favourite pony in NZ was PTS ( many years ago now) after being kicked in the field, she was out with ponies she'd been with for over a year - sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to why these things happen, its just a tragic accident and bad timing.

My heartfelt sympathy to the owner, and YO - and all concerned.

Awful for everyone involved.

I recently moved to a new yard and we introduced my boy to his new field companion with a week in adjacent paddocks. They then went in together and were fine for about five days before kicking seven bells out of each other. I got a call from the YO to go and check him over and I was lucky - he just had a swollen stifle but is now fine. I'm conscious that it could have ended the same way as on your yard and would have felt dreadful whether he was the injured or uninjured party.

The two horses are now chatting over the fence but we have decided not to reintroduce them until there is much more grass so that they can occupy themselves better. Then it will be fingers crossed as it always is in these situations. I don't want him to spend his life on his own but there are always risks.

Now Im slightly concerned about my boy as want to move yard in summer but he won't go alone in paddock so unsure how to safely introduce him to herd or at least one horse. He is not a kicker when moved to current yard he went out with 2 old mares who don't kick either and he was most happy so hoping this will be a solution too

My old boy had his radius fractured by his field mate. They were in a perfectly safe field, used to each others company and as far as I know they were not going crazy, I turned him out, came back five minutes later and it had happened. It can happen at any time to any horse. It is worth taking precautions when introducing new horses but nothing can guarantee their safety. If you have horses sadly you will have injuries. I am so sorry for the horses owner.
