Terrier people - What breed do we think Roly is?

His mother was a parsons JRT, however his father was only described as "the farm terrier"! I have always described him as a Patterjack, as he certainly didn't get to be black and tan being a straight JRT.

Thoughts?

Brilliant. Somebody who agrees with me that pure JRTs don't come in black and tan (-waits for arguments from people who have black and tan jrts).

I did wonder border terrier cross parsons but then his legs seem very long even with the parsons background and his paws a little bit chunky for that. How tall is he? That might give a clue. A nice looking terrier whatever his parentage.

He looks a bit like my girl, her mother is JR and Dad half JR and half Yorkshire terrier.

she has a longer coat and slightly shorter legs though.

could be border x

Regarding black and tan JR's - I thought they weren't actually a breed as such, only the 'Parsons'

Both of mine are black and tan but neither is 'pure' bred.

I'm not sure which point on the shoulder you measure to, but he's roughly 34cm to the blade of his shoulder.

There is no way that straight JRT parsons come in B&T, I mean, yes you could have a trad with a few generations of B&T but somewhere back in history there will be border/paterdale etc in their breeding.

You are right, there is no such thing as a pedigree JRT (trad) only Parsons.

Thanks for the nice comment, I think he is a very useful type of dog, he is very fast, game and very trainable - I couldn't be more pleased with how he's turned out :)

He looks like a parson x jrt to me. Because saying jrt can mean he has 101 different things in him anyway. You certainly do get black and tan jrts, it comes from having things like manchester terriers in the cross back. Most jrts have a mix of all sorts, border, patterdale, lakeland, manchester terrier, fox terrier, parsons, yorkie, even chi's and corgis feature in their ancestory to breed them shorter and and smaller.
He's gorgeous whatever bits of breeding are in there. :)

I'd go for a typical Border X, that is a typical stance for them although his front feet look a little long and splayed so perhaps he is a rough coat JRT X which had Border or Fell back a few generations. What's his tail like, does it have a central ring around it and does his coat finger strip too, all pointers towards Border being dominant there?

Wow, there's a terrier person.

WHat do you mean by a central ring - what do I look for?

Coat finger strip - can I pull it out with my hands?! Excuse my ignorance, I need to learn more!!

Lol, yes, bred and showed Borders for 20 years; I've just looked but haven't any pics which would show you a tail.
If he's Border, he should have a classic carrot shaped tail that tapers to the end, not thin at the base and stay the same width to the end. Halfway along (if there's Border in there) there should be a central ring; if you run your hands down it, you'll feel a slight ridge which is where the tail changes colour and usually has a siver tinge around the ring; when he needs stripping, this hair goes very coarse too.
You strip (pluck) Borders out by hand when the coat is ready and you can usually tell when the both, the coat comes out easily with a gentle pull (if it doesn't, it's not ready - and he'll object!) and the coat flops over and forms a central parting along the back which will show you the new coat coming through plus his undercoat. That's another good Border pointer BTW, does he have a double coat (top wiry coat, soft, fine undercoat)?
Nice looking dog though whatever his parentage!

I would say he is border x parson he has a look of gizmo however gizmo i think has taken more to the border he has the ring round his tail. His brother and sister is smooth coat and nobody thinks they are from the same litter as only gizmo is broken coated.

Here is gizmos dad

Oh yes, I'm a full firm fan of terriers after my two. I have just had a text from home saying Roly has just decked it down the stairs, I can imagine he was doing the fandango at the top and not watching what he was doing LOL This morning he was fake playing with a bit of rubber and when I tried to get involved he set up running the length of the house at warp 9, barking at me on the way past!!

He is very cute! My Daisy is out of a patterdale bitch by a patterdale x dog (he looked exactly like a patterdale) but the dogs grandmother was a JRT. The whole litter were either red or black except for a special little girl..........

Hmm, he has a border look to him but there may be a possibility that he's got some fell in him too (but then fells are just proper mutts and can be any size and shape). Mickey was an 'old type' parson jack (well, his mum was half beagle) and he looks nothing like him.
His colouring is too rich and his hair looks too course to be a lucas or lucas cross.

Maybe he's border x fell x jrt? He's a definate cutie, whatever he is :D
