Does anyone have a terrier which gets on well with cats? Please tell me a bit of background on the bonds, how were they introduced, etc.

i have always had JR terriers and cats! no probs. background my dogs love and respect me and my cats adore me and my dogs know not to chase my cats (yes they do play! but not chase or kill) other cats might be a different story as they are not "our cats". its all a discipline thing. and NO has to mean NO in all respects! my JRs do mouise and rat and kill! but not the cats! and the cats do rats mice and rabbits!

our jrt loves cats, we got him at a year old and he lived with a cat from when he tiny, they used to chase each other round the house. when he came to live with us he ran up to our cats and they hissed at him, he was very upset!! (we have another dog that loves the cats, but she loved them a bit too much!!)

he liked my mums cat and they used t sit curled up together.

ours are slowly getting used to him, The cats rule the house though for sure!

My 2 JRT (and rottie) all lived happily with 3 cats for years - the 1st JRT was about 2 years old (rescue) and settled in very quickly once she learnt that cats have claws, however "strange" cats are not safe with her, the 2nd JRT arrived as a 5 week old puppy (another rescue) and was mothered by the oldest cat and the other terrier. She was always very close to the cats, would play and share beds etc very happily with them and really pined when the last one died a few months ago.The rott was 9 weeks old on arrival and was regularly beaten up by both cats and small dogs until he learned how to play nicely and that cats can sleep wherever they want, including his bed :)

I never had any problems mixing them, just made sure the cats had an escape route if they wanted it and immediately stopped any chasing of cats but tbh more often than not it was the dogs that needed protecting from the cats!

Mine will all chase a strange cat but only if it runs - if it stands it ground the dogs back off immediately.

My jrt x moved in at 9 weeks old - my cat has been the boss since day 1 and because the dog repsects my cat so much when we are out he doesnt even react to other cats at all if a cat crosses his path he doesnt even acknowledge them. She has whacked him in the face a few times and he knows not to mess with her - when hes being really playful with his ball or toy indoors she will often lay on it just to stop him - its hilarious.

My JRT adores all of our cats and esp close to one of them and they play endlessy, however we have just moved yards and she does keep a beady eye on the yard cat which makes me keep a beady eye of her ..
