Sorry this seems a really naff question but I’ve genuinely never had a terrier before! As y’all know I am besotted by little Georges, and I’m very aware he has a very feisty independent character. I’m a bit sad that he doesn’t seem that keen on being..... those of a delicate persuasion look away now!!!.... hugged, cuddled and kissed 🙄

Is this normal for terriers, or is it because it’s still early days?

Yours in clearly rapidly increasing insanity, Levrier 🙄

We have a terrier staying with us at the moment who is a regular here, and is always very settled with us. He cuddles me, but not my OH, but actually prefers my OH - go figure.

Absolutely no help at all...... 😀😀😀

Depends. Dee would quite literally climb inside me if she could, but Eira is not really interested in cuddles. She sort of makes an exception for my OH on the condition he tickles her tummy, but she'd definitely never seek out a cuddle

Georges seems to like fuss on his own terms at the moment - he will sleep on my lap, or very close to me, but I hate the way that sometimes when I go to stroke his head he will cringe away 😢 That’s a trust thing that will only come with time I know!

Terriers are definitely individuals. We've had 6 over more than 30 years and every one has been very different. We have two just now and one likes to come for a head rub or tummy rub when it suits him, will stay for a couple of minutes then move away again. If you inadvertently touch him uninvited he moves away immediately but if he chooses to lie beside you and you ignore him he's fine. The other one loves to lie beside you or on you, loves kisses and cuddles and spends the night snuggle between Mr EM and I and if you move away he immediately follows almost as if he has to be touching you. George sounds a bit like our first one!

I have kept 5 terriers over the years (not counting the 6 in the family when I was a child). All the Jack Russells have been lovely but didn`t think much of being cuddled or kissed! They liked being stroked and sitting next to you on the sofa and were perfectly friendly under their own terms. My Airedale liked being stroked as well but wasn`t a cuddly sort. I think you need a pug if you like to cuddle and kiss a dog, they are so squashy and actually seem to enjoy it!

I shall be content if Georges lies beside me on the sofa all evening (which he has done) and on my bed at night (which he does until he gets too hot!) 😊 I was worried it was something I’d said, but it appears not 😄😄
I think you speak dog Lev, so I would like to bet it wasn't something you said!

My mums Yorkshire terrier is a nightmare. Wants all of the attention on his terms and timescales.

He's very demanding shoving his head under your hand for a head rub, or tipping an ear in so you can rub/stroke his ears.

He's another that always wants to be very close, but not always touched, so if you touch him without permission he buggers off upstairs huffing and puffing his displeasure away.

Mine will wave a leg asking for a stroke. My OH could have just done a 14 hour day and she demands stroking. She doesn’t do cuddles though. The nearest I’ll get is when she falls asleep on my lap. Her lack of wanting to be cuddled is why her first home didn’t click with her, but I just think it’s because she’s a bit of a diva and I love that about her.

My two JRTs were cuddle monsters, and lay on my knee/chest, kissed faces, and buried under the bedclothes with me to sleep.

Our Lakeland in comparison is quite stand offish, she never licks or kisses, and occasionally lies beside me on the sofa.

Had all three of them as pups.

I think it probably depends on the dog, and with a rescue, probably what it was allowed to do when younger.

Ok having been offline since the beginning of Sept due to house move, I'm having lots to catch up on. A terrier for Lev?!!! That definitely needed reading and what a lovely outcome for George. Well done to PP for rescuing him and Lev for taking him on. Having had 3 JRs, they were all happy, friendly dogs but oh so very different characters and definitely sought affection on their own terms. The only problem I had was the last one developed separation anxiety when I left the house even though my OH may have been home!
Once the new house is organised and land dog-proofed, we will be looking for another JR/terrier (or two ;)) and I just can't wait. Good luck Lev, you won't regret entering the terrier world.

Hector came very timid and the first time I kissed him he thought I was biting him and ran away. He has got used to it now, but prefers just to lie on you rather than actually be messed with. Kissing and cuddling are definitely for me not him, but a least now he does not fell at risk of death and tolerates it to some degree, relaxes into it even and will sleep in my arms like a baby. I am sure he would prefer to be in a fleece blanket nest in the crook of my knees though.

Lucy, who came to us at nine months old[we were her fourth home!],ten years later still cringes if we go to stroke her head but just loves a tummy rub and lying right next to you.

I have two snuggly staffies , want all your attention all the time , yet if we go to the beach, and gixx the deaf one is off the lead, she runs over to people and gives them a big swerve, its like, “yeah you wanted to clap me but nope im not letting you” 😂 she doesnt like strangers. My wee border who passed in feb would love anyone tho

my JRT loves to snuggle! the second i sit down shes on my knee, doesnt want snuggling but wants to touch/be on me.

This is only for selected people though! and any other dogs then arent allowed near unless its to curl up and sleep! shes a fussy little lady who like to be in charge, but shes perfect and i wouldn't change her for the world.

My border terrier is a cuddle monster. She will cuddle with anyone all she needs is an empty space next to you or an invitation to sit in your lap.
My beagle on the other hand will only cuddle for a minute or 2 when he feels inclined, which is not often
