So I was having a look at the RSPCA site put in the thread below (Why...) and I noticed that for JRTs it says you must have experience of Terriers and their needs.

What does this mean?

I have two JRTs and they are brilliant dogs. We have no special experience of Terriers - and we did get a brother and sister at the same time. We have had so few problems with them - so are we just lucky.

I would say terriers need engaging and firm but fair handling. Although I would say this is neccessary with ALL dogs, I would say that an average terrier would take a lot more advantage than say, your average labrador.

As Kitty says! :)

I'd also like to think it might act as a primary screen and stop some of the twonks who just go "Oooh ickle cute dogs" and think they would make cute handbag accessories  That might just be wishful thinking though!

I have a JRT and she'd say her needs are: run run run run run run run run play play play chase chase chase (ball) sleep sleep followed by lots of food! She's a right pain on holiday where there's nowhere for her to run for hours as she's used to.

I think a lot of people think, because they are small, they are not 'real' dogs and don't need the socialisation, training, exercise and need for having manners put on them that larger dogs do, and that is why a lot of them end up yappy, scrappy, bolshy and try to take on absolutely everything bigger than them...which of course leads to horrendous scraps for which the big guys get the blame.

As mentioned, my OH's brother made an extremely stupid purchase of a very young JRT puppy as a Christmas present. Make no mistake, he might be small and ridiculously cute, but there is a little lion in there and he needs to be tamed!

I don't agree with EVERYTHING in this article, the dominance theories go a little overboard, I know it's not specifically about terriers, but makes interesting reading, sorry for re-post

It raises a lot of good points CC.

I think of my jacks the same as I have ever thought of any of my dogs, which I think is why I have ended up with two good (on the whole) dogs.

They do however sleep with me in bed sometimes and Lil does get princessified (new word) BUT, they sleep in their crate all night without a peep when I tell them and even Lil has been known to get ousted from the sofa when she's in my spot :p

I suppose I am quite firm about things anyway. The dogs certainly know I am the boss. I'm not one not to move because a dog or cat is sleeping - I tend to make sure I am comfortable first.

We did have an issue with barking and jumping up quite recently - I was really unhappy because my two great nephews were visiting and the dogs barked at them, tried to chase them and jump up at them. So we worked on that for a couple of weeks.

I found compressed air worked brilliantly and they now just need me to say enough to stop barking and they don't run at the boys or jump up at visitors. In fact when my family were all around two weeks ago and the younger boys were running round and round - the dogs just sat next to me or one of my daughters and didn't move.

Like I say, some of the theories are a bit bananas 'Sleeping on your bed makes your dog think he RULES ZE WORLD!' etc :p

I'd love to know what he'd think of my friend's SchIII dog, knocks grown men on their backs for fun, lying across us on the sofa getting cuddles, watching 'Strictly..' :p
