Just had a really scary experience. Took my GSD Buffy for a walk today along a footpath I hadn't used before. Across a field where they had cut silage so had her off lead. She was sniffing long grass at the edge of the field about 10 foot in front of me when she disappeared and there was a splash. When I got to the spot saw the edge of a drain set in the ground with the cover by the side of it. I really thought I was going to look in and find she had disappeared.

Luckily she was standing up with her neck and head out of water. I could just reach her collar but was not strong enough to pull her out. Tried going down foot holes in side of tube but couldn't lift her. I have never felt so helpless. Decided to leave her and run across fields to where farmer was still silaging and to cut the story short he had a rope in his cab and with me climbing down again to her and him pulling we got her out. She and I were both covered in disgusting orange water, apparently it is only rain water etc off the field so hopefully no lasting damage. However, she has an open wound on her tail where she had a lump removed (see my other post) and I am really concerned this will get infected. Have given her a really good bath and she seems okay, is curled up asleep at my feet. I have had a shower but am still a strange orange colour , looks like I have had a really bad fake tan! Cookies to anyone who got this far, although think I am going for a strong drink myself, think I just needed to write things down.

I really thought I had lost her for a little while. I will never be letting my dogs off lead in unfamiliar surroundings again.

Thank god you are both ok! That must have been awful. I think my worst nightmare is losing Muppet down a drain or somewhere I can't get to him to help him but dogs will be dogs unfortunately

Buffy seems okay, although very clingy, she is following me round. We both still have an orange hue, I am hoping it is just dirty water not chemicals. My arms are stinging but think there were a lot of nettles so am putting it down to that. I have spoken to my vet because I was concerned about the open wound on her tail from her revious op, but he says it should be okay, just keep monitoring it and bathing with salt water. I just keep imagining what would have happened if the water had been any deeper, thank god we have had quite a long dry spell.
