See in the paper this morning that Terry Prendry the late Queen's groom that used to ride with her has been appointed a "Military Knight" at the age of 72.

This is not a 'Sir' and the award of this doesn't give any financial income but it entitles him to live in a residence in the lower courtyard of Windsor Castle for probably the rest of his life.

What a nice thing to do and shows that the 'honours system' is not all bad.

This is so lovely. Typical pony - more interested in the grass.

I owned a Fell pony as a child. Brilliant animal - up for anything. Hunting, lone hacking for miles, Pony Club, showjumping, nannying daft youngsters on their first outings - she did it all. Completely straightforward, would go first or last. I bought her as a four year old (used up all my savings and pocket money) and rode her until she was twenty-six, when she was retired. She was pts at thirty, when we couldn't control the arthritis that was getting the better of her.

A bit sad to read from Terry P. about the late Queen's last ride on Emma. Some lovely pictures as well.

He says at the end that he promised that Emma would be buried beside Burmese, the last horse she rode at Trooping the Colour

Sad and touching.

I wonder if I’d want to know in the end if that was my last ride.

It was a nice article. I thought the Queen had given up riding before then, well done to her. She managed a short ride and then it was off to Balmoral.

I went to a talk about a year ago given by a lady who worked as a groom at Windsor Stables, probably in the 1970s. She said the corgis always came first when the Queen was coming to the stables so you knew she was close behind.

When she started most of the horses in the stables were the Queen Mother's ex racers, including the one the Queen rode, which had come third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Another extract from the Pendry interview with Gyles Brandreth.

Not specifically about the late Queen but I can just imagine DoE doing this having read Brandreth's biography of the Prince.
