Ok i cant ride in my myler snaffle for dressage comps because of the hooks (even though i never use them!) I cant use a normal snaffle becuase he has such a fat tongue that he finds the nutcracker action uncomfortable and tends to back off the bit. I was recommented to try a KK ultra bit, but at £77 pounds in the local saddlers i'd have to know that they were good. Has anyone used one, either for schooling or comps, what effect has it had and why? cheers guys!
 
I used to use one on my old horse. He had a habit of hanging his tongue out the side of his mouth during dressage and the kk was the only bit he didnt do it in.
When i got my next youngster i used it on him too to begin with. After a while i discovered he went better in a JP snaffle with single joint, so thats what hes in. My other horse i have at the mo is in a french link snaffle and it doesnt seem to make any difference if i put him in the kk bit. Hope this is of some help.
 
Go for a neue schule. Half the price, and I have used both and not seen a difference either way. Also neue schule have a larger range of mouthpieces with lozenges, get in contact with them and she will be able to advise you what would do....
 
I bought one. Dont think it made a lot of difference other than I think the metal is supposed to encourage mouthing. My mare does mouthe but not really certain this is due to bit.
 
You can buy a myler snaffle without hooks that is dressage legal. The advantage to that will be that you don't need to change your horse's mouthpiece

Sprengers are lovely bits, but some horses are very fussy about their mouthpiece and you can't know that he will like it, until you try one, so it could be one of those 'buy wrong, buy twice' situations

Thanks, i know its sooo difficult. I have seen mylers without hooks, but they dont have them at the saddlers. Im competing next weekend and need something by thursday at least so i can practice in it. if all goes wrong ill put his loose ring french link in, but hes far more tense in it for some reason...if anyone knows where i can get the myler by wed/thursday online without having to pay rediculous £9 next day delivery i would be grateful to hear from you...

[/ QUOTE ] They are often available on ebay new or second hand. Although ocassionally you can get someone with slow delievery, but if you email a seller and explain, most would make sure you have it! Also I tend to buy bits from www.stubben4u.co.uk Very reliable and they don't charge P&P! Don't know if they sell mylers, but it is a tack shop, so you can ring them, explain and they will tell you if they have one, how long to get it to you etc. At least with the Myler you know that you don't need time to try it out because its the same mouthpiece. www.derbyhouse.co.uk do sell them, they charge P&P, but if they have it in stock (again, I'd ring to check) even with standard delivery you will have it by the competition as they are very good too

I've previously used a KK bit on my old horse, not sure whether the ultra or the training snaffle, but it was quite thick & heavy - though presumably you'd be going for the thinner mouthpieces. Bought a neue scheule bit for my youngster (as so much cheaper than the KK) & he goes well in it BUT I would say that he has marked the bit quite a lot already (only had it 6 weeks or so) so not sure how long lasting it will be.

Given the price might be worth trying to hire / trial a bit (won't help for your dressage comp but for long term). Have heard good things about Gills Bit Bank (good advice & trial period allowed) but never used her myself.
 
My mare didn't like hers. She goes better in a bradoon, the KK was too kind for her and she took advantage. I have ridden many horses in a KK who have gone well in it but like everything, it will only suit certain horses.
 
If you do a Google search for The Myler Bit Bank I've always found that they will get bits out very quickly if you need one urgently.
 
I LOVE KK bits!! If I could afford 12 then all my horses would be ridden in them all the time! I can't, so I only have 3.......two B-rings and a hanging cheek.
 
My horse goes exactly the same in botht he NS and the KK. However she is usually ridden in a bog-standard cheapo lozenge bit, and she isn't nearly as consistent in this as the other two.
I am trying to buy a NS at the mo, I was tempted by the KK with my Christmas money but I looked at them in my local tack shop and the finish on them was awful for £70! The metal looked like it had been hacked at to get it into shape... shame. So I'm after an NS now instead, and they're cheaper.
As others have said though, try one first if you can.
 
I bought a KK Ultra off ebay for £31, and Axey goes really well in it

I was a bit naughty actually, I hired one from a tack shop for a week, decided I liked it took it back and bought one off ebay for half the price

You wont have any joy with Gill's Bit Bank, Gill seems to have gone into receivership

I love KKs, I have a B ring (on recommendation of Tia aeons ago) and its prob my fave bit
