I am planning to worm my 2 ponies but before I go ahead and blindly order a wormer I’m wondering if
/ what they need in the first place! There are so many wormers available at different price ranges I’m a bit baffled. Can I get them (cost effectively!) checked in the first place and if so how? Thanks!

Yes you can worm count but you'll need to worm anyway this time of year for encysted redworm and tapeworm.
There is a saliva test for tapeworm.
Have a look on Westgate labs, its a good starting point.
I worm in April (tapeworm) and October (tape and encysted). Then worm count in January and July.

I just did mine with Pramox last week for tape & encysted, I'll egg count now in two weeks to see if everything is ok. If so, I'll then egg count the rest of the year & only worm if required. Everyone has different ways - worth speaking to your vet & also as mentioned above, westgate labs website is good reading.

I always ask when a horse was last wormed or had a FEC before recommending Equest Pramox. It covers everything but if a horse has the potential for a big worm burden then it can be a bit too effective and there have been cases of colic.

So when did you last worm and what with? Ever sent off a poo sample?
