Tet vaccine

the nearest vet to me charges a £300 call out - so if I can get hold of the vaccine, is it legal for me to give it to him myself? I'm sure it isn't but thought I'd ask! Just to put myself in the clear, I have a completed a certificate in agriculture so have done my fair share of cattle/sheep injections!!

If you just want him protected then by all means do him yourself.
If you need flu/tet protection for competing you will need a vet to stamp and sign the passport.
An option might be to take him to the surgery yourself. Whichever side of London you are, surely there must be a good practise not far outside the M25??
 
Remember you said he hasnt had ANY either, so he is going need to complete course of 3, and the first two are pretty close together, so you need to find a vet, there must be ONE close enough to you!

What would you do if you had an emergency?
 
It's a bit of a catch 22 situation. The tetanus vaccine is a prescription only medicine. In order to sell you the vaccine to administer yourself or write a prescription to enable you to obtain it then the horse has to be in your vet's care, so your vet will need to have seen it fairly recently. The answer might be to get a vet out to give the 1st vaccine in the course and then give the others yourself.
 
My god!! My vet over here in Canada could come and do it cheaper than that .... even including you paying for his air fare! That is absolutely outrageous!
 
hi, most vets will allow you to buy the vaccine to administer yourself (it is legal for you to do this). However, they will NOT sign the vaccine card. If you just want the vaccine as cover then that isnt a prob. If you need to take him to shows etc then you will need a vet's signature on the card. You would not be allowed to sign the card yourself as the 'vet' (it will prob say vet's signature on the card) as this would be illegal. Hope that helps. Im moving my horse down south and the vet practice i work for do my vaccines for free (im lucky!) When i move, i have already phoned a vet's down south who said they will let me buy a vaccine for me to do myself so im sure you can buy one from a vets.

ps £300 is daylight robbery, we only charge £30!
 
It is legal to administer the vaccine but it would be illegal for a vet to dispense/ prescribe the vaccine without satisfying themselves that the animal is under their care. If you have had a vet out to see your horse for another reason recently then they may be prepared to do this, otherwise it is unlikely.

I agree that £300 is a heck of a lot of money - it is amazing how much variation there is in what vets charge!
 
Are you joking? £300? That cannot possibly be correct?! My vet charges £20 for a call out.

If possible, could you not load your horses up and take them to the vet? He could jab them while they're still in the box.
 
That's ludicrous. Why don't you ring round vets just outside London and arrange to box your horse up to their surgery for the jabs?

Are you sure you have understood correctly? £300 is insane. What do the other people on your yard do? And what about the Met Police? I'm sure they don't pay £300 for a call out!

Whereabouts in London are you? I'm sure somebody on here will be able to suggest a fairly local practice.
 
What??? I thought it must be an April Fool, but it's not April. £300 just for a call out is totally wrong, how do they justify that?
 
Which practice is it that charges that much for a call out...... oh yes the one where they all drive Range Rovers!!!!

There will be someone who will come out for less, good luck, and as suggested box up and go out of area, perhaps with a group of friends.... or are they all rich enough to pay the £300???
