Do vets always insist that a colt is up to date with his tetanus jab before doing the op?

Just enquired about a horse who was castrated whilst with current owner, but she says that he has never been vaccinated?

I'm confused

No, so long as they have a shot of anti-toxin at the time of the op. Vaccination is always advisable but not every owner will go for it.

My colt was gelded without any vaccinations she gave a anti-toxin at the time got them both vaccinated against tet now all is well. Top up every 2years

No, colt would have had a tet jab for protection at the time but that is not vaccination.
You need to start the course properly, the 2nd jab between 21 and 90 days from the 1st jab with 3rd and final jab between 150 and 210 days from the 2nd jab. The last jab determines your yearly booster date which should be every 364 days from then on.

I stupidly mistook the fact that a youngster had an anti-toxin jab, for the fact that it had full protection this year. It didn't, we put him down, it was distressing. Don't make the same mistake.
