I have always had my horses vaccinated for tetanus (booster) every 2 years. I have recently heard that you dont need to do it as often as that and this is taken from a BHS guide-

[ QUOTE ]
The course consists of two primary injections
given approximately four weeks apart, followed
by a booster vaccination a year later,
and thereafter at 2- 5 yearly intervals.

[/ QUOTE ]

Has anyone had any experience of tetanus booster vaccination longer than 2 yearly intervals?

There is one vaccine (Equip T) that is licensed for use every 3 years. There isn't one on the market that has a longer interval. Tetanus is really nasty and vaccination against it should never be skimped on!

agreed

Its not about skimping, i will make sure my horses are covered appropriately but I dont mind saving! I have a lot of horses so vaccinating every 3 years instead of 2 saves me a third of the costs. On the number i have to do that is quite alot of money! They dont all fall at the same time so i need several visits a year just for vaccinations.

I wonder where the BHS got their info from then, if there isnt a vaccine licenced for more than a 3 year interval? Thats quite bad really, as many people taking their advice could get caught out and have to start again.

I will carry on with 2 yearly intervals until i next see my vet and ask her about it. I was just interested if in practice anyone had had a longer interval in case the BHS advice was wrong, which it appears to be!

Hope my use of the word 'skimping' didn't offend you - wasn't intended to, was just stuck for the right word to use

. Definitely speak to your vet next time you see him/her as you'll certainly save a significant amount with 3 horses to vaccinate!!

I have 6 to do so would also be interested in one that went longer than 2 yrs..will have a chat with ma vet too.
I have brought a couple forward so that they all get done at the same time this year which at least saves me a couple of callouts..

Our vets (and a lot more these days) are starting to do free 'Zone Visit' days, so if the callout is for something routine and its a Tueday, for example, we don't pay call out charge, just services and drugs. The system helps the vets manage their time so their not driving all over the area for different things, there is a designated vet for the zone on that day....may be worth asking if your vet has a suggestions box!!!!!
