Tetanus

i,ve only seen tetanus once thank goodness , it was a lovely yearling colt , owner hadn,t had him vaccinated of course , he died horribly , mine are all vaccinated without fail

Sorry, but with modern cheap vaccinations available to prevent this awful illness, anyone who allows their horse to get tetanus is being negligent in their care.

I didn't ALLOW my horse to get tetanus, there was a mistake in the vaccination that was used unbeknown to me. I would never knowingly leave my horses unprotected!!! I was just wondering if anybody could help as if we had not been so vigilant & quick with our care she may well have not survived & maybe more people should check ALL vaccinations given as I have never felt the need to check up every time. All I am trying to do is deal with the situation I have been put in & try to do the best for her!

She may well have survived because she has had the injections before. So she will have had some immunities to it unlike ones who havnt ever been vaccinated. Sorry not of more help! Try posting in veterinary that might be more useful!

In that case, I offer my apology. Was it a vet mixup, or a drug company mixup? If so, I would be claiming back my vet's fees as you would have been charged in the first instance for a tetanus booster, so they are at fault. The only horses I have ever heard of having tetanus have been devoid of immunisation, hence my first reply. Sorry again.

Thank you for your apology. It was a mistake by the vet as he only gave flu vaccinations not flu & tet for some reason. However he has given all treatment regarding this free of charge so I do not want to go any further with regards blame as I have used this vet for a very long time. I like & respect him & have never had any other problems. She seems to have made a full recovery but was just wondering if any one else had experienced this & if their horse had any long term effects from it.
