Watched a recent episode where owners of dogs tethered over 100F will be fined on the first occurrence, serve 4 days in jail on the second occurrence and then 4 weeks on the third! This is a welcome relief for those poor dogs and I’m really pleased that the authority enforces this so well.

But why do these people have dogs in the first place if all they are going to do is tether them? What kind of life is that for a dog? No social interaction from humans or other animals. One man had 18 pit bulls in his back yard all tethered! What the hell for???

It really annoys me that people hoard animals. I feel so sad for them never to experience a decent life. Or is it a case of a life is better than no life at all?

Didn't see the programme but I am guessing they are tethered because they don't have a fence to contain the dog. If that is the case then in my opinion a tether would be preferable to an invisible electric fence.

Were they house dogs tethered for short periods or tethered 24 hours? Leaving them tethered for anything other than short periods would also be a big "no" from me. Taking the dog into the garden on a long line would be a better option.

I agree with you, its no life for a dog.

From what I've gleamed from watching the programme the dogs are tethered continually. They become vicious and aggresive because of their confinement and total boredom especially when they are alone. It happens across all the states in America although some states have laws against tethering or restrictions on time limits that they can be tethered.

I think these dogs must feel such hopelessness and despair.

That is an existence, not a life.

ETA. Just to clarify. I am replying to your comment that they are tethered 24/7 365 days and I can't see that now, I think you must have edited your post.

When we were renovating years ago one of our dogs was on a long chain in the yard during the day. The other option was shut in a shed with no half door or the house, when she'd been used to a big run where she could watch all the comings and goings all day, I hated it on principle but she loved it. She still had the same walks and plenty of human interaction and she was a sedate type who wouldn't ping off fo the end of it. We lived on a very fast road and in the middle of sheep country so roaming was not an option.

Sometimes tethering a dog to the point of frustration is deliberate, when you look at the breeds and types involved, it isn't a simple case of poor husbandry.

I hear your point but in your case your dog was only subjected to tethering during the day. I assume she was received social interaction from you when she came in at night.

The issue they have in Arizona is predominately due to the heat. Dogs that don't have access to shade or water. Dogs tethered next to other dogs so that their lines can become crossed. They showed a video of a small dog being dragged across the yard by a bigger dog as their chains had become tangled so every time the big dog ran to the end of his chain the little one was flying through the air.

It's certainly not how I would choose to keep my dog. However, I dont see the issue if it had adequate shelter from the elements and companionship and was free from danger of injury etc.

Used to watch this programme all the time. Wish we had animal cops like them.

I used to watch these too, Amymay. Must have been about 15 years or so ago?

Eventually I stopped watching them because there was too much cock fighting, dog fighting and I just couldn't stand it when they used to take a starving dog, bring it back from the brink of death then give it a bowl of food or sometimes a high value treat like a pig's ear and try to take it back with a plastic hand. They were then PTS for failing the test. FGS.

I don't watch much TV these days but I'll check out the new programmes and see if things have improved.
