Just want to say thank you to everyone for all your support and comments about Jack over the weekend, it really does help.
I had his post mortem results and he had a tear in his diaphragm which was on old scar tissue, so he had had a small rip previously which had left a weak point, once the intestine started to poke through the tear it all just went massively down hill so quickly that he didn't really stand a chance, he was on hell of a little fighter and I can only be glad that I was there when it started and he wasn't alone.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has had this happen.

Thank you all again

I know of a horse than kept colicking, scoped etc but couldn't find a reason for it. Although owner always said she thought it was more than colic. Horse died after a huge colic attack a few weeks ago, PM was carried out for insurance purposes and a 35cm tear was found in the mare's stomach. And yet she was out competing and winning all last year without showing any discomfort.

Poor Jack. It's very sad, but at least you know the full story now.

My friend's horse was found dead in the field one morning, having appeared to be fit and well the day before. The PM showed something similar to Jack's. It's awful to think there could be a time bomb ticking away in any one of them with no signs or symptoms.

Hope you are coping ok - thanks for posting the results.

Don't know of it in a horse but in a cat!

My cat had a tear in her diaphragm about 3 years ago - we don't know how but she must have been in an accident. Luckily the vet was able to sew it back up and she is now fine (cost me £500 even though she wasn't really mine).
Different altogether with a horse though I should imagine - they can't just x-ray them like they can with a cat.

Sorry for you loss

Just wanted to say I was so sorry to have read your posts - sending you a big hug and the reassurance, it will get better.

I think my friends horse died of the same/similar - ruptured bowel. Was fine earlier and then she found him dead with no real explanation but PM was carried out for insurance too. I ahve heard somewhere this is a sort of grass sickness but without the normal signs (ie going downhill over a period of time, weight loss etc), it is just immediate. Anyone else heard similar?

a friends pony died of colic on the 30th March.

he had had bouts of colic quite regulary and normally a pain injection righted him.

unfortunatly when he took ill on the 29th the injection had no effect.
he was still in substantial pain and went to the vet college.

he was always a bad loader and even semi sedated and in the agony he was in it took 3 men and the vet 40 minutes to load him

stubborn little git!

when he went into surgery they found a scar and rip in his large intestine - meaning that nothing more could be done.

the scar had been there a long time and was the cause of all the other smaller bouts of colic.

quite similar to your boy in a way.

sorry for your loss

So sorry for you that it happened but so glad that you were there for him. Poor Jack and poor you.

The ruptured diaphragm with loop of bowel through it happened to an ex of mine. He broke up a fight between his mate and a stranger, got the stranger on the floor to calm him down and felt the stranger "punch his stomach". The police came and dealt with it and it was only then that my ex realised he had been stabbed, it was only a small wound and a trickle of blood and was dealt with by sticking a couple of steristrips on.

12 months later he developed severe stomach pain and went to the GP - who told him to be more careful how much he drank. He took some paracetamol and carried on but the pain didn't go away, eventually he went to A&E because he felt so bad and they were a bit sceptical and sent him home telling him to take painkillers. He was staying at a friend's house at the time and they heard him crying out in the night and took him back to A&E who were still sceptical until they realised that he was having breathing problems and a lung was partially collapsed. He too had had a loop of bowel go through the previously undiscovered tear in his diaphragm. It was touch and go and he has the most amazing scar from the repair work. Had he been in his own place, by himself, it is unlikely he would have made it through the night.

At least in his case we know what caused the tear but it was very scary.

At least u know what happened now. One of my Aunt's ponys had to be pts a few years ago because she kept getting colic and during surgery it was discovered that a section of her intestines were narrower than normal and the stretching it was doing made it weak so it started tearing.
