Firstly... A HUGE thank you to Hellybelly who gave me her 6" pelham to try on Earl!!
A few of you may remember a post a while ago on which bit to get for Earl as he moves out of a french link snaffle and in to double reins. I received lots of great advice (thank you all) and decided to start him with a mullen mouth pelham. Hellybelly then came to the rescue with a spare bit for me to try. It arrived yesterday morning so Earl was promptly introduced to it in the afternoon. I let the instructor ride him in it first in case he had an adverse reaction to it and I ended up making it worse by catching him in the mouth. He was very confused at first having only been ridden in a magennis snaffle by previous owner and a french link snaffle by me. He resisted a bit to start with in his transitions by bobbing his nose about, but he soon realised it wasn't going to hurt him. After 10 mins I got on, kept the curb rein fairly loose and off we went. HE WENT THE BEST HE HAS EVER GONE!!!!

He could have been more forward going and a lot more responsive to my leg but he carried himself so well and was so light in my hands!

After watching us my mum now insists we go to Equifest next week! I was sooooo pleased with how well he took to it on his first time!

He actually didn't resist once when I rode him, well apart from when I asked him to canter and he was feeling pretty lazy so wouldn't move forward, I had to give him a big kick which he didn't like so he responded with a big buck followed by 3 very small bucks!

I don't think that was anything to do with the bit though, he just didn't particularly want to canter! But anyway, really pleased!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

Hi. Am delighted that Earl went so well for his first time. Its great news and I am sure he will improve as he gets used to it.

Keep us posted on his progress!
