Thank you for your support and wishes.
When I saw Phantom yesterday/last night, i had no inkling of how bad he was. He ate his food, was a bit down but talking, neighing when he saw me.
This morning, he was loathe to move and refused food, so I came back and got hay which he was eating, in the shelter of trees. I took his rug off and he had lost weigh drastically, my thought was grass sickness. I took him a bucket of water. as he was nowhere near the trough.
I knew he had to be stabled for the best, so arranged with tracy to occupy the isolation stable, and borrow a horse for Herbie as companion.
It was arranged for afternoon, soonest we could get lorry. Vet would then see him at yard.
However, lunch time, he was in a bad way, laboured breathing and weak. I actually thought he wouldn't make it then. Vet was called urgently, as he would need relief to manage to travel. I text Rachel to let her know.
He was going down quickly. So weak, suddenly.
many calls to vet to make sure he knew where to come, eventually arrived 2 hours later.
Phantom very obviously poor, and bloods taken etc. vet said, he may not make it, but tlc and a stable might just pull him through. If he stayed in the field, no chance. Rachel was just sobbing, and we had to get Herbie and his temp companion out (field may be contaminated) and take them to the other field.
They would not load to go to other field. Herbie was just refusing, and it was getting dark. Dangerous near a dual carriageway, so me and lad had to walk them to the field, leaving Rachel with lorry man taking Phantom to yard. No other choice , Tracy had to drive my car.
Waiting for taxi to take me to yard, after dropping Herbie off I get a call to say Phantom had gone down in lorry.... Rachel with him and just lorryman. My sister called and zoomed down to grab me, I was in agony over Rachel being alone. I was just sobbing and screaming that i needed to be with rachel.
Got to to yard, lorryman said, he has gone. Rachel was holding him.
I screamed and ran in and held Rachel, and shouted at man he should have been with her. All I could was hold my baby and stroke Phantom and say sorry, sorry i couldn't have been there, sorry I could not help Phantom.
(I apologised to man btw. it was not his fault.)
Just impossible that he went so suddenly. Within three days of being off colour, he has gone. 4 years old, and Rachels pride and love. I am aching for my daughter, I don't know what to do for her.
I can't believe this wonderful pony, who we have since a yearling, has gone.
I will get results tomorrow, so will know what it is that killed him.
Tomorrow, we have to sort out removal. He is in lorry still, as nothing else we could do . Rachel will be coming, to cut a piece of mane and say a last goodbye.
I feel so much pain for her .
Of course, hours later, I can see it was better than him dropping in the field and for her to see him there.
He knew, you know. He wanted to be under the trees, secluded. Herbie was his constant watch, and just wanted to be with him. When I walked Herbie to field, he was an angel, lead him dropped rope, whereas normally he would pull you and charge about.
This is all so unfair, so sudden and not believable. Last week, he was picture of health and fun.
I will get results tomorrow, and I would imagine the field will not be used again. Will be watching Herbie closely, although he is fit and normal.
I am just in pieces, not being able to help rachel, make it better.
rest in peace my beautiful boy.
