The less than perfect car passers would get a big smile, wave and a mouthed ‘F**k you ‘ which if done with a big enough grin looks like ‘thank you’
I found as well, if you’re not able to put a hand up to acknowledge the driver as they pass, most people check the mirror once they’re past and then you’ve time to nod or wave as a thank you.
