...2 guesses as to whom I'm referring to.

I was a little later this morning calling at the yard to let them out on my way to work, normally down an 45 mins before YO and have already mucked out etc so the YO was down at the yard before me.

I noticed as I walked across the yard that both Mackenzie and the mare were out, said to YO oh thanks for letting them out, has he been creating?

''errr well, yes and no, he kinda let himself out and you'll be glad to know he's had his exercise for today as well''

Goes on to tell me he's just gone to turn the first horse out (not one of horses on Mackenzie's row, he knows he's got to be first out) anyway he only just got across the yard with the other horse and hears a bang bang etc carries on and thinks well I get him next, 20 seconds later bang crash wallop and Mackenzie smashed himself out of the stable, door off, broke the kick bolt at the bottom, the top bolt and bent the hinges, he washed sure exactly how he'd done it, just heard it and then out popped Mackenzie coming round the corner.

...however the door in still in once piece.

So Mackenzie is not in the YO's best books today.

Joking aside, now we have a problem because he now he knows he can get out if he feels like it. :(

So anybody got a lion cage? :D

All because I decided to wash my hair this morning!

Naughty boy!

No suggestions really, other than to armour your door? I think I have heard of people putting electric fencing across their doors to stop this (haven't done it myself!)

Or could you put some wood across the top opening, so he can still see out but not put his head over the door? If he can't get his head over he won't be able to barge the door - unless he headbutts that first obviously! :D

I guess a more permanent solution would be a grill? :)

My old Arab did this, he lived in a field next to a mare and if she was out before him, he went mad. Sooooo we cut a scafold pole down to size and drilled holes in to make it a removable thing, had it on inside of his door, but also to stop him getting out. Worked really well and after a while he stopped letting himself out, so we removed it.

Umm, character, yes you could call it that!

How about plank of wood accross the door that goes into two slots at either side? Sorry, not very clear and can't find a picture, but people use them instead of a stable door sometimes, but you could put it on the outside of the door as extra re-inforcments! Or a grill then he can't get his head over to barge the door. Little bu**er!:D

Yes some good suggestions there thank you guys.

Hmmm I'll have a chat with the YO and see what we think might be the best option, I think on this occassion it was just a one off because I wasn't down before the YO and Mackenzie's always the first out, obviuosly thought that he wouldn't start up unless you took either horse from his row out first, so that's what 'thought' did for you  so long as he doesn't make a habbit of it like during the evenings when I've got the mare in the school and he's still in his stable (next door but one to another that is) but if he's worked out he can through his weight about and escape we may have problem during the evenings.

Think I might have to try a grill perhaps or some kind of pole to slot across just for evenings ( I mean when I'm working the other horse) so it would only be up for a short period, if I stop him from looking over the door completely on regular basis he's go crackers as he rears up and also kicks the walls so he'd do himself injury that way.

He'll learn...eventually.
