That "Bucking" Pony - Any ideas?!!!

We had a 13.1hh Welsh\NF that was like this.

To be honest we never really stopped her, we just learned to stay on. My instructor always said she taught me (and lots of others who came after) far more than a well behaved pony.

Her favorite trick was to grind to a halt from a canter, to unbalance rider, and then put in a tiny buck or spin complete with shoulder drop to deposit rider. Then she would stand and laugh while you got back on for another go. I came off 7 times in one 30 minute lesson in the early days!

Once you could stay on for her whole repertoire she would be an angel, but woe-betide you if you got out of balance as she would always 'help you on your way'.

She went through several loan homes with our Pony club, and was well known. The instructors used to like to use her to put anyone who was being cocky and thought they could ride on, and see how long they lasted! (This was the 80's!).

We never did mange to sell her, she had a little bit of a reputation, can't think why.... She passed away aged 35 in my field last year.

He certainly is not in pain...I can tell you that! He seems to be fine cantering, but only if its his choice! Took him out for a hack sunday and decided to go for a trot, next thing I knew we were cantering flat out up the verge! Have to admit with all his bucking in the school, I have myself fallen off and been launched onto his neck a few times! Thing is there is NOTHING in front of you (and not much below you tbh) !! *eekkk*
One thing sarah...I'm not being you guinea pig rider lol lol...will happily watch and get on after if he's behaving! Lol! xx

Shazzababs - it sounds like your horse was lucky to have you!!!!! I've no doubt we'll have to learn to put up with Charlie's bucking, but the kids don't just come off, they come flying off !!! he even throws me onto his neck and I've ridden loons in my time !!! Rupert the Bear is right, he really is v difficult as there is simply nothing in front of you and very little under you, especially when he bucks out to the side !

I'm going to try some grass reins at the weekend tied to the d rings on the saddle (he's already ridden in side reins) .... let's see what that does.

I'm not wanting to send him to Kelly Marks as:

1) I've had a useless experience with her before in the past.
2) He is only with me on full loan and the cost of getting him potentially right could be more than he is worth (especially at the moment!).
3) He'll probably be ok with them and then still go back to bucking with us a few months down the line.

Welshies huh!

I wouldn't waste my money. :)

We can't use the antibucking thing /grass reins on ours because he doesn't really buck as such - he leaps, twists and drops a shoulder and propels them at high speed (only once, so far , resulting in broken bones). And he usually gives me a dirty look and squeals about 2 seconds before he does it. He just likes to make sure he's as far as way as possible from me so I can't catch flying child.

I think now is an appropriate time for this:

My daughter would have absolutely hated this but fair play to the child, he keeps getting back on and I understand that the pony has now gone back to being a lead rein pony -where it doesn't display any of this behaviour. Horses for courses:D

OH MY GOD!! that video is amazing - I want that little boy, he is so adorable, I can't believe he keeps getting back on bless him :)

Uncanny - that pony looks identical to Charlie AND Charlie has a big C clipped into his bum too ... now I wonder if that has anything to do with it all ! LOL

I'm going to video him this weekend, but that has made me feel so much better - thank you !

Nikicb - Your pony sounds identical to mine .. are they related do you think !!!!!!! I must admit although it is so dangerous I'm starting to see an amusing side to it all now !!! .. if I find a solution, I'll let you know :)

haha love naughty Ed, if i hadn't still owned our little devil pony at the time i first saw that i would have sworn it was our little chap.
kidsriding006.jpg

my daughter riding him in the little pen and doesn't he look the picture of innocence:rolleyes: but note the side rides to stop him eating and tipping her off over his head;) that was the extent of his off lead capabilities, a little walk around the pen with me stood in the middle glaring at him lol:D

Suprised that no-one has mentioned putting a spare stirrup leather or martingale strap around his neck to give the rider something to hold on to.

ours had a cub saddle so it had a handle on anyway, but even gripping on to that he could still buck her off! the only reason i'd have tried a neck strap would have been to throttle the little monkey with:D

I say again when they're good they're very very good. I sent ours to PC camp on a hundred acres of lush grass after she'd been in a starvation paddock for months. Her rider really had no control whatsoever and the pony knew it but did she put her head down to eat? No, not once. She knows her job and when you're working you're not eating - no matter how tempting it is!

I can't believe how similar to Charlie all these lovely little Welshies look !!! Yes Dee, when Charlie is good, he too is exceptional - great in traffic, good on the lunge in trot with kiddies on that can't ride (bar last weekend) ... he follows me around the school with them off of the lunge all day long in walk, and has never bolted which I must say from experience is a BIG plus point.

meandmyself - I've tried that lunge whip melarky ! LOL not a problem if there is no rider on but if there is he just bucks higher and then they are normally off in 3 !!! :) LOL

Love him!

Just to let all of you know who have those naughty bucking welshies that I have sorted it .. I purchased a daisy rein and now he doesn't buck at all !!!! He doesn't even try ! What a miraculous change for £10 !!!

Happy riding ! x

*giggles* it's been a month:D If you've been using it for a month and he's still a reformed character I am wildly impressed:D They're crafty little blighters these Welsh!
