I have just almost took a wobbly when I got my horse insurance renewal through yesterday. The policy (exactly the same as last year), for 9 year old cob and equi trek trailer has increased by 33%. Has anyone else had the same increase.

I know most things have gone up but really? - 33%?

Our trailer is still insured (expensive, but they do walk!), but I have now decided not to insure my mare anymore. Her premium was over £500 this year (fit and healthy 9yo, no loss of use!) and I have the pay the vets up front as they have now changed their policy with NFU. I have 3rd party ins from BD and I shall put the ins cost into a savings account each year (if only to prove to myself that it is a saving if nothing else!). Tbh her insurance was for vets bills more than anything else, but with any tiny little thing mentioned when the vets are out there runs a risk of another exclusion, which on top of any treatment having just a year on the clock makes me think that it just isn't worth it anymore.

I have seen people saying this on other forums...

I only insure mine for vets fees and public liability to keep costs down.

Worth shopping around for quotes I would think.

I only have him insured for PL and loss of animal. No vets fees. I reduced that last year and saved £251 on the policy. We tend to pay any vets bill as they come in, as again, any little thing you claim for gets excluded.

Trailer and horse will definately be insured but I most certainly will be shopping around. Those of you with NFU policies, prepare yourself.

I have just had a customer in and his car insurance went from £408 to £700 this year. Needless to say he cancelled his policy with NFU.

My premium with NFU will now be £899 a year for a 12 hands companion and a 13 year old riding horse, hacking only. I am definitely going to look at ways to be covered for personal liability and will cancel the insurance. If I put aside £900 a year, I stand a good chance of saving money over a 10 year period!

I have just moved my 18yr old to a combination of pet plan & BHS membership for my public liability.

I was with NFU and it seams to go up by about 33% every year I have saved over £200

I was with NFU and this month my renewal came in and it had gone up from £350 to £570 and I haven't claimed in 2 years  I shopped around and got a good quote from KBIS, they had glowing reports on here and were extremely helpful on the phone. They just excluded sarcoids but i was expecting that as George had one treated a couple of years ago.

When I did insure I used to do it wanting vets fees only, so I insured for the minimum value of horse that I could. It keeps the bill right down. It is perfectly above board, because the vet part of the premium is based on what work you declare the horse for, not its value.

I don't insure now and I have saved a lot of money over the years in spite of losing a horse who cost £2,500 and paying £2,200 for a tieback. If you have more than one horse, and the discipline not to spend the money, it is cheaper to put the premium in the bank.

You also need to think VERY hard about what your answer will be when a vet says "we might be able to save this horse but it will cost £5000 and there is a 50/50 chance whether it will work".

Cheapest way to get third party only is in with your house insurance, lots of policies have it. Next best is British Dressage Associate membership. You do not need to be a dressage person to take assoc. membership.

Thanks for the responses. I spoke to another bloke today and his insurance with NFU increased by about 35% too. Looks like most peoples are going up that much. Needless to say, he's not with them now either.
