The ‘next’ dog - breed suggestions

You forgot Lancashire heelers , who would also tick most of op boxes though some can have a touch of separation anxiety .

Oops just realised you were talking terriers not all groups .

I know the terriers better from our VN stake qualifiers, that's all! Heelers are lovely little dogs. There's some shocking ones on there now like Wolfhounds

Would a Staffy be too big? You can’t beat them around children, and they’re the most affectionate dogs going!

As mentioned already, Tibetan spaniel or Pap would be my suggestion. I love both. Really bright and engaging little dogs.

Other suggestions would be Dandie Dinmont, the gent of the dog world (but would need to be prepared to wait and seek a good breeder) or Havanese, not my usual choice but I’m yet to meet one which is a bright and merry little character.

I don’t think Corgi’s would provide what you are looking for, and I say this with two snoring at my feet. They shed like crazy, are very stubborn and strong willed, they will herd your cats (and my cats roll their eyes at them) even when told not too, they like all their people and animals to be in one place together or else aren’t very happy, and they like to do things on their terms so it is more negotiation is key. The pluses are they are of course wonderful, happy, and fiercely loyal dogs. They have a zest for life that means even on the bleakest days, you can’t feel too glum. They are very cheeky (/little shits). Oh, they are quite ‘sturdy’ and like to be not only lap dogs, but head dogs too - and boy, do you know about it when they are on you. My male often makes me feel like I’ve had a stroke when he lies on me for a long time!

They were one of my first suggestions! We have a yard staff who I just adore, she is perfection. Hard no from OH, not pretty enough 😞 so far he liked the mini pin suggestion and the papillon, but he says they are basically just chihuahuas so can we not just have another one of those 😅 he likes the Whippy suggestion too.

Oh, and the powderpuff version of the CC. Unclipped they look like Pippin. Very bright, very clever, very active. I see one on walks regularly, and it changed my whole perception of the breed!

They are beautiful- never met one in real life. They sound about chi sized but if slightly sturdier they could be a good shout. Certainly a very silky coat!
The drop eared version, phalenes, are one of the most beautiful of the small breeds IMO.

Thank you, that is very helpful. Give your cheeky little shits a pat from us 🥰

If your OH wants something to stroke a sight hound would be good, you could try the specific lurcher rescues , they often have puppies as well. All of the lurchers I’ve had are very cuddly, my current one is about 3/4 whippet with a bit of bedlington and collie and he loves a fuss , he is about 21ins to the shoulder
