Who would have thought we would have nearly 5 minutes on last night's episode of The Archers, where the vet and farrier were discussing the causes and treatments of laminitis in such detail. Was the BBC trying to do its bit to raise awareness?? I wonder what the non horsey listeners thought of it all.
Poor Cranfield (I think that is the horse's name) and surely Elizabeth should have known about laminitis.

LOL no I wouldn't have thought about the Archers covering that. I guess the episode is available on the BBC Sounds App for anyone who wants to listen x

Jakob sounded as if he were reading from a textbook
Who calls soaked hay 'low sugar forage'?
And I've never heard anyone talk about therapeutic shoeing

I heard that too, and agree with the 'reading from the script' bit. On the other hand, it did reinforce a couple of useful messages for beginners / general public i.e. "Don't over feed your horse" and "Horses need company". I was not too sure about the apparent plan to put another pony in the same stable with the sick one though!

I thought it was good and timely - lots of horse owners won’t be aware given current weather - lami ponies and horses are at risk as the grass is growing and sugar levels high. My boy started coming off the grass a couple of weeks ago as he suddenly went cresty and neck started to go hard almost over night. As for therapeutics shoeing, you may be very lucky and not have owned a laminitic so may not be aware of this. My boy had heart bars on after a bout of lami; xrays showed he needed support. My friends horse had special shoes made (can’t remember their tech name) so no, it’s not at all uncommon for therapeutic shoeing either during a or after a bout of lami. The advice Jacob gave probably was straight out of a text book; but to be fair - pretty much what any decent vet would tell you to do!

I understood that as put something nearby - but I could be wrong? I think he was trying to make the point, lami can be worsened by stress, which again is something people may not realise?

I don’t think it was the concept of ‘therapeutic’ shoeing that CE was highlighting more that it’s not normal terminology.

I might skip that bit on the omnibus :p I’m not good with their horsey bits :p

They keep giving Jakob the odd autistic trait so maybe the ‘reading from a textbook’ was intentional. Has he managed to chuck Kate back out?

Exactly - my vet/farrier talk about remedial shoeing; I've never heard anyone call it therapeutic

he is going to hit the roids hard, Freddie can go back to supplying.

Which also, no bloody way you'd be allowed to squash yourself with a bench press in most gyms :p.

I stand corrected on the theraputic bit - just listened to the episode again :p You're right Cauda equina - it is usually remedial! I misunderstood what you meant, so sorry for the long rambling reply (though i doubt anyone bothered reading it ;)) Yes the horsey bits can be hilarious with the clippy clop noise....

Caught up with it last night, gawd its SO poorly scripted isn't it ? Now I see the confusion, it IS Elizabeth with he laminitic horse, Shula (PITA) has the yard/riding school but obviously noone except the farrier & vet have EVER heard of a fat horse getting laminitis. Amazing.

What also strikes me is that lots of then don’t ride for ages or at all, then suddenly they are out on a horse. I have no recollection of phoebe ever riding (I presume she has and I’ve just missed it!) yet she was taking the new horse out when Kate rang the other day.

Am waiting for Shula to fit in ministry and running a riding school in but then again she’s not there that much

I heard the episode this afternoon but turned if off. Elizabeth runs a yard but is clearly an idiot and Kate being pregnant with Jakobs child is just a step too far! I am totally sick of the Archers and hope The B at Ambridge burns down. Why does everyone in the village have to be so ridiculous?

Shula runs the stables but is still an idiot ?. Elizabeth owns and runs Lower Loxley the stately one from which Nigel famously plunged to his death. Lizzie knows nothing about anything so poor Cranford Crystal is not in good hands ??

Nope. it was Alice taking the new horse out the other day which begs the question what has happened to Spearmint ?.

All The Archers horses are required by law to be a)voiced by coconut shells and b)have stupid names!

Ah yes Alice I got them confused! Still wasn’t aware she rode either though.
I guess because even if they were always riding when on the phone for all the riders I know it would definitely be a topic of frequent conversation in the household, without the addition of coconuts

I am loving all this gossip about the Archers. It is rather weird combining a discussion about The Archers with the H&H Tack Room - a bit like two worlds colliding.
I must admit that I am an avid listener, ever since I used to get annoyed when I found that the FM Radio in the kitchen in the 1970's had been tuned from Radio 1 to Radio 4 (in the days when it was a knob!) so that my mother could listen to The Archers.
