Today we headed to Munstead UA ODE. This was to be our first step up to 90 and following a good few weeks of XC schooling, dressage and show jump training i was hopeful it would be a positive experience!

This is our first year out eventing, and so far every event has been a so close yet so far sort of thing, but this by far took the top prize!

The day started well with a lovely 22 dressage, in a section where only 3 horses scored sub 30, so we were in the lovely position of sitting in 1st!

and then it all goes down hill from here . . .

showjumping warm up was interesting, there were two big (huge pedalo sized) plastic swans in the garden next door which were there to cause havoc . . . she was ok, but very distracted by the swans. the OK continued into the ring i couldn't really ride forward as there wasn't much there, but we hit most fences on a decent stride. Unfortunately just toppled the first and then a mis communication caused a complete miss at the first part of the last double but otherwise not a bad effort, just need more ring practise so i can actually ride her how i want to not just work with what she'll give me! Surprisingly we were still in 3rd at this point.

XC started well, flew the first, second, third, fourth. jumped well into the 1/2 coffin at 5, dodge line into a little house at six which then had a hard curve right to a roll top full of brush on top at 7a followed by a step up stride rail as B & C, and this is where the wheels came off. 6 jumped well, found the curving line to 7A but didn't have the shot i wanted so sat in the rhythm leg on going for the long one, nope, chipped in . . . now this fence was huge, not a fence you should be chipping in infront of!; this is me with said fence, i'm 5ft6

She jumped clean over the top of the fence landing in a heap with me hanging round her ears, which could have been saved, if she hadn't then gone on to jump B and C. . . with me still hanging round her neck . . . and then run off in panic because i was still trying to hang on . . . and then jump the electric fencing into the next field, with me still hanging round her neck . . . at which point i probably decided we'd lost any hope of a placing and bailed out the side door as she hot tailed it back across the course!

I lay flat on my back, resembling a stranded beetle, trapped in the knot of number bib, body protector and air jacket waiting for some one to come and rescue me wondering how on earth we went from the high of a low 20's dressage and dreams of 1st place to laying in the middle of a field unable to get my air jacket off . . . but such is the sport we enjoy and sometimes it just isn't your day!

Ruby is fine, un scathed and back out in the field, i am a bit sore but saved from worse injuries by my trusty air jacket which has more than earn its keep this year!

Next plan was another 90 run to finish off the season at Tweseldown, plan is now to drop down for a nice confidence giving run round the 80 before a little holiday and a winter full of showjumping!

Oh no!! Hope you are OK, but my dad would be pointing out how good it was that even without you in the steering seat, she jumped through the flags!!!!

Yes, that is true, although i would have drawn the line at jumping the electric fence (you can just see it behind me in the photo!

Oh bloody hell poor you!!!!! Congrats on the fab dressage though. Xx

Never one to cause a fuss or anything!

So pleased with the dressage though! although i did come out saying erghh that was bad! didn't feel great and a few obvious mistakes which the judge seemed to miss or forgive . . . i'm not sure!

Oh dear, started so well. Hey ho, as you say, one of them things. What on earth were huge swans doing making an appearance?! V distracting I'm sure.

At least you have her well trained to jump whatever is in front of her, am sure it will stand you in good stead when you're not hanging off her neck!

Well done on your amazing dressage score, I must of been about 15 mins behind you 😊

That was the only fence that slightly scared me and was bang up to height!!

See you at Tweseldown!

oh no poor you, what a shame, glad to hear you are both OK though and as others have said, fantastic dressage score, well done!

onward and upwards, we will see you at Tweseledown, no doubt! I will be the slightly green looking person on the grey (possibly swigging from the hip flask!)

Oh LP poor you, hope you're not too sore, but I love that you sound like you're laughing about it. What a sport - why do we do it? Fab report, and some great pictures, brilliant dressage mark, good SJ and that is a full-up 90 fence. Love that she carried on and finished the combination for you!

Good plan to go for the confidence giving 80 round instead of pushing it right at the end of the season.

I think they were little boat/ pedelo things, no idea what for! but she was insistent that they should not be passed withing 5 meters!

Oh really! How did your day go? - I'll probably be at T'down both days as going to fence judge the other day

Will be at T'down so do come say hi if you see us! We are both fine and ready for the next one!

I have to laugh about it! Thankfully we are both un-scathed and will live to fight another day - its just one of those things with this sport isn't it!

What a shame about the XC, but it sounds like an unfortunate mis communication in an otherwise very good day! Well done.

It really was, just a shame it was so early in the course she felt brilliant otherwise, so onto the next one!

The swans are a pain, luckily they never move and my boys seen them the last few times! When warminh up for SJ a lady was having problems with her horse with them so is quite common!

I managed to come 5th, how I managed a score of 31.8 for dressage I'll never know as I'm not sure outside bend is required for whole test 🙄, managed a double clear which i'm pleased about as its my 2nd time at that height! Hoping Tweseldown is a nice course as last time the 80/90 caused carnage 😕

Good luck and enjoy!

That was probably me having trouble!

Wow well done, fab DR and brilliant DC! The XC was a fairly good test so all credit to you!

I think T'down will be much kinder this time around, i know they received a bit of stick for the BE earlier in the year!

Lol, possibly, I was on a bright bay that was very sweaty (it's all very exciting don't you know!)

Let's hope so, I did the BE80 last time round, hoping for a nice end to the season!

Oh, how annoying after being in the lead. BUT if it is any consolation, that fence was in the BE90 the week before and my mare absolutely ballooned it (as an ex-showjumper she doesn't really get the whole "brushing through" thing!). The pro pics are NOT pretty at all and it was only by sheer luck (rather than skill ;) ) that I didn't end up around her neck. All I could hear as we galloped off was the hysterical laughter of the fence judges at my "Holy ***" comments as she did it!
Another friend on a supremely talented young (and very green) horse had a similar issue and she said she thought it was quite "mean" for a BE90, so you were definitely not alone. See you at Tweseldown :) :)
PS Tweseldown have posted that they are intending to make the xc a little softer than the BE event so that everybody has a confident end to their season :) :)

Well done for getting through it!

It was a bit of a question, not too bad as a stand alone fence but just the line to it and on a down hill before a B & C just upped the difficulty quite significantly!

Yes have spoken to a lot of people r.e Tweseldown and everyone is of the consensus that it will be a nice run, so really looking forward to it!
