Hi

I am hopefully taking on a loan horse he has had a bad history before present owner got him, she has only had him for a few weeks, But feels she is to novicy(sp) to bring im on he was broken then left to do nothing and is now in his late teens.
His mane/tail and feet are very brittle and his coat has no shine to it, he is also very very greasy.

What would be the best supplement to try and improve the above?

Would a basic biotin one cover everything?

It is a bit of a minefield out there as there is so much choice and I've tried various supplements but have recently swapped to a balancer as it has all the vits and mins and can be fed quite economically. My two are on Spillers Lite Balancer with Happy Hoof as they are both in light work and are good do-ers, the youngster had really brittle feet and they are much stronger now and both their coats gleam and it doesnt make them fizz up :D - if you email all the different companies they will give you an idea on the best thing to do.

If you need the horse to put on weight you can add a high fibre cube but the nutritionists will be able to guide you so give one a try just remember to introduce any new feed gradually - good luck and enjoy your new horse :)

I use Formula4Feet, you just need to feed a scoop and it's got good levels of mineral and vitamins. The horses generally love it since it's apple flavoured.

The Original “Vit-Min” Cod Liver Oil Condiment by Argo Feeds, comes in a tub costs around £7.50 ish, basically you just get a couple of small handfuls and mix it into the feed.

''This specially formulated blend of Cod Liver Oil contains Seaweed, Spices, Minerals and Herbs to promotes healthy bone growth, bright eyes, shiny coats and general well being both internally and externally.''

You'll see a clear difference within weeks and you'll notice how well they feel too.

I have my 24 year old mare on linseed this is fab for the coat it also has oils in that is good for joints, I bought a big tub from a horse fees place for about £10.99 but you can search on e bay / net for it.

Good luck

Agree with stacey - I feed linseed to both of mine, one is a good do-er and one a veteran but they both benefit hugely for it. Its a real super food.

Combined with seaweed and Brewers Yeast it feeds feet, coat, joints, the works. Best bought in big 20kg sacks from Charnwood mill but although the sacks last for ages, its a big initial outlay if you are only feeding one. All 3 can be bought in smaller bags from feed shops.

Best of luck with your new horse - make sure you take some before and after shots, we would all love to see the progress! X

Have found equimins hoofmender a very good all rounder.. has good levels of biotin all the amino acids, vits and minerals plus yea sacc too. that and linseed in a foreage based feed.
