The Boy

He is lovely & can't wait to see more pics of him over the summer :D.

Don't worry about the pelham & roundings use what ever suits you both. I ride my 5yr old in a pelham with roundings & he isn't even strong, but it's the ONLY bit he is happy in & can't begin to list bits I have tried

Glad to have helped :) The bucking could be down to the saddle.
I would certainly use a back riser pad for now (a folded small towel can do much the same job) - you want the seat of the saddle to be as level as possible - at the moment it slopes backwards... if you're unsure maybe do lunging / longreining and ground work until you can get a saddle sorted as you don't want to make him sore...

While adjustible gullet saddles can be very good, don't be fooled into thinking that just because you can change the gullet, it will always fit him...this can be a very common misconception.

You should be able to pick up a good second hand saddle for reatively little money, but if your saddle fitter thinks you may need to change saddles again in a few months time it may be worth using a cheaper (but well fitting) one for now before upgrading to a better one when he has muscled up in a few months time.

thanks cbfan. waiting for fitter to call me back for appointment :) the saddle came with him (along with neglected dental problems) so not surprised its not bloomin right!

megibo - we're still trying to work out if he's just naturally a happy boy or whether he's just a bit 'special' and is in a permanent state of blissful ignorance :D

Hi All

RESURECTING THIS OLD THREAD OF MINE - I have heard from another of his previous owners and she has sent me photos of him in his glory days - prior to him being neglected by another owner. Look how different he looks in these! THIS is my motivation now that I know his potential.

And as comparison - this is what he looked like after the above lady sold him on

If it wasn't for his very unique markings then I would t think that was the same horse! Looks like you'll have a lovely horse if you put the time and work in. Keep us updated :)

Thanks :) Can't wait to see how he ends up looking this Summer. What a beauty he should turn out to be! How do people allow this to happen, seeing the before and after photos (although not the way we are used to seeing them on here!) makes me angry.

He is gorgeous. I'm sure his previous, caring owner is happy to see he is in a good home now.
He looks a lovely sort - very kind face and lovely colours. Have fun with him.

Thanks :) Yes the previous nice owner is sad that he got in such bad condition (she had tried to buy him back when she realised he was for sale again but the other owner never replied to her). So she is really pleased to hear from me and has been telling me all about his happy past. He was schooled to county show level and was sold as a "county level coloured show pony". Wouldn't think it now the little rotter - but at least now I know he is capable of it :)

Lovely horse - he' going to be a cracker by the time he gets some spring grass in to him.

Agree about the saddle - better get it sorted now, rather than face problems further down the road.

Bless, he's a pretty lad. Lovely for you to see him in his former glory so you can appreciate his potential. Must be great for his original owner to find out he is in good hands.

Just a nice positive update to say thanks for all the comments re-saddle. Have just got back from saddlers with a lovely new second hand saddle that fits him beautifully and felt 100% better as soon as I got on. Even managed to walk and trot nicely round the saddlers arena without any bucking/plunging (which I was very nervous about).

He also had his dental work finished last Thursday which included removal of the second tooth - so teeth now sorted and saddle sorted!! Any future bad behaviour will be punished by beating :)
