hi, i went last year and it is so much fun! they mainly teach you how to race/work ride and do basic stable management from mucking out to putting bandages on, etc. anything in particular you would like to know?
they ask questions like 'what is your experience (if you have any) with racehorses', 'why do you want to go into racing?', 'how far would you like to go in racing?', 'where do you want to be in a few years?', i cant remember them all, but een if you havnt prepared an answer, dont worry, they're all easy and if your nervous they joke and say 'breath!'
highs were (for me) - riding, always with your mates, the fab instructors, the food!
i think the only low was the first week or so, if your not used to working the long hours it can be quite tiring.
some horses were georgous to ride, others, not even jockeys could hold them. in the box, watch out for arius, because he was a grumpy old git who could untie himself and lash at you! but dont worry about getting ran away with, they only go in a staight line
the only problem i can think of is when the washing machines broke and it was 1 to 30 girls! but i dont think you will have that problem then you get there
you wear a radio, and they follow you in a van.
the latest time your off the yard is 6, in the summer after waters up, otherwise, it would be 5
i had 2 falls, first was in the indoor and someone got ran away with behind me and came right up my horses bum, he launched and turned super tight round the corner and i just went out the side door and another (not really a fall) was when we had a bareback fun lesson (you didnt have to do it though) and i was on the boneyest withered horse ever and i just had to bail but fell over at the same time. the instructors dont mind, if your ok they just laugh it off with you
ahh okays,
i would be worried that the van would spoke the horses lol
was you like nervous at first?
like about the fact you would be riding horses that are strong ect?
ouchyy, while we are talking about falling do you always wear a body protector? like i know you have to, but is this all the time?
What did you do after the 9 weeks at the school?
no, it doesnt bother them at all.
i was never nervous of the horses or falling because i wouldnt consider myself as a nervous rider but i did get nervous on one horse because long story short, i got ran away with for 12 laps of the 2f round gallop, and was exauhsted from trying to stop the damn thing, but other than that, you can only enjoy it
. if you get to breeze or ride a piece of work it is awesome!
they didnt hurt, the surface is nice and soft
they guarenteed you a job, where i am really happy at, and now am living at and have my horses on the racing yard
thats good thens,
ohh my :/
that could be something that would make me very nervous if i was ever in that kind of situation, and i tend not to be nervous untill i have a fall, and i had a fall a few weeks back and my back is killing me! so right now my confidence is kinda low, however once im out of pain i will be okay.
Yeah like i really want to do this because i think it will build my confidence as well as give me something to aim for.
You know how you look after two horses, do you ride others or just them two?
awh that sounds sickk, have you been to any races with the school and/or where you are at now?
its a great confidence builder, they even have the mechanical horses to give you extra help on if you need any.
ouch! i hope you get better quick!
you ride two different horses everyday, in the exception of 'sir can i ride harlov tomorrow!! sir can i ride harlov tomorrow!!' which he would let us do sometimes
the brs takes you to newmarket races if they're on, where you go into the stable areas etc. i have lead up once, but we've had little runners because of heavy ground and flat horses.
