The Burghley Thread of info

I have just booked to get the early discount.

I promised my nephew I would take him for his 18th birthday but he's nearly 21 now thanks to Covid. He's never been to a 5*

I'm eye rolling at the fact that they still want to send out paper tickets, really. . . ?
And they'd like to charge you £8.25 for postage because if they are lost coming just first class you lose them completely. That's more than the difference of buying them on the gate for me, so will be doing that I suppose!

I wonder if the £8.25 includes postage for the Christmas card they send every year!

I am going, all four days with members tickets. Moving back in with my mother for the duration so I can be 5 minutes away. Very excited for the horse trials to be back for the first time in so long.

I hope that the shopping is still as good and that the poor stall holders haven’t folded under COVID.

A bit dubious about food this year and I’d expect prices to be very expensive as they have taken on one sole trader for all food outlets. I believe the food aisle will still be there but unsure if they will be selling hot food. Will be gutted if there’s no Loch Fyne paella!

I’m stewarding again this year, so I’ll probably wave some of you across a crossing at some point or another on Saturday!

I'm stewarding as well, I'm looking forward to it.

What's changed regarding the food vendors?

We are heading to Burghley for the first time since 30 years ago ?
Paying on the gate, any advice for the best time to arrive in the impossible hope of missing vast queues?

It's a very Britcentric entry list this year. Where are all the Europeans? A lot of them have more than one horse at the level so surprised not to see more of them - not one German!
They are getting ready for the world championships in Italy in 2 weeks, Laura Collet etc all going to that instead

Early...like when it opens!!!! 8am should be ok, the closer to 11 you go the worse it is!

Interesting that an event rider is still described as being ‘very young’ when they are 25.

25 really isn’t that young in most top level sport.

Also I think 'Young Rider' classes are 25 and under in all the Olympic disciplines (I'm sure someone will now correct me!) so a lot of people will focus on that pathway to build experience rather than heading to the 5*s.

In mosts sports you can practice at as a high a level as often as you wish - e.g. train for that pole vault / long jump etc, and get all the muscle memory and experience you need. Downside is you are considered old and past it before 30.

In eventing you cannot ask your horse to repeatedly jump the Vicarage Vee time after time (or if you did you wouldn't have a willing and able horse for very long) so it takes more time to build up the experience. The upside is that you can compete at the top level in to your 60's, because age and expereince is a positive not a negative.

20 is very young for a 5* star competitor, and there was at least one 20 year old riding today.

25 is young-ish. Long out of nappies.

Alice Casburn is just 20, first 5*s this year. And just a thoroughly nice person, I am really looking forward to seeing how she progresses.

(Met her very briefly at Burnham during the 1.5hr stop after Caroline March had her horrific fall)

Its much better than the Badminton TV coverage was! My only complaint is its not easy to find the live coverage...I have to keep searching on Live to find it ?

I really like Bubby Upon, she's 22 and is a super talent ?
